I’m not building one, but over the years I have taken my two previous coaches apart and put them back together enough that I can only imagine how much work is involved. Just modifying one is a lot of work.

but you’re way ahead of me. I may be forced to have that sofa custom made
because I can’t find one that fits the way I want it to. ‘Sure hope I design it
right the first time because looking at all I have to do yet causes naps!

Yes Bob, there is another one of us. I live just outside Springfield MO and have been working on my coach for the past 8 years in the evenings and weekends. I started with a 1991 XL 40 that was a Las Vegas casino runner. It has just 84,000 original miles since new. I am about 80-85% complete with the build. I would be done in less than a year with it if I didn’t have so many honeydos that keep me from working on it.

thanks to mother nature i have just recieved another 40 cm(15 inches) of fresh snow and -26 deg. cel.(-15 f) temps so i am on hold again for my bus build. last year i did just enuff to go on holidays,but this is the year for the final build. i am a great fan of your work bob and i would like to get as much of your knowledge as i can.

my curent question is. this year i am going to install holding tanks in my bus. 50 gallon fresh and i am undecided if going seperate black and grey or if i am doing one tank for both(grey and black). also i am interested in know abought the venting placement. are you running a pipe throught the roof or are you venting somewhere else.

i hope you are ok with being my idle. and if anyone else can help that is just as great.

winter for me should be gone in 2 more months so i hope i can get most done before holidays in september

Hi Bob. I am in the same boat (well, Bus) I am building my 91 XL40 myself. As they say on Wipe out “Big Balls”! I’m looking for a slide window for to replace the original Drivers window. I believe most of our store bought conversions vent through the roof. All of mine have.

The exception is some fixtures due to placement may not vent through the roof and they generally use air admittance valves. The only downside to an air admittance valve is if it won’t close you will get tank odors in the coach, but that just is an easy fix.

same construction techniques. I just copy. Roof vent gets stink up and lets wind carry off of course we could go into the technoscience reason but that works for me..All the guys here can give guidance on systems. I’m just a little less $$ challanged than most therefore have to find a way to compromise…besides I love to build things!! That is really the biggest reason. Poop flows down hill and vent your tanks up. Keep your S-traps full. If you use a 4 inch hose to dump your holding tank fast it can suck the water out of the S-traps. 1 tank vs 2. If you are a boon docker 2 is a plus so you can dump gray water on ground(if allowed). If not some opt for just one tank. The store bought coaches have 2 a black and gray water tank. I use 2 for clean out purposes; run black thru discharge first then gray to clean out line. The valves Jon speaks of are avail at most Lowes/home depot type stores. Just a check valve that fits after S-trap to down sewer line to let air in system without draining your water from S-trap.
I’ll work on spell ck and better answers. Jon and the guys have rebuilt about every system on these coaches.

Check this out @ Home Depot a Oatey 1-1/2 in. ABS PTC In-Line Cheater Vent It is for a 1-1/2 line but they do make 3 & 4 inch. We used these on basement buildouts when we could not get a vent to the roof. It is also cabo code approved with the building inspectors. Does a great job and doesn’t allow odor back at fixtures. The brand I used was a Studor vent from plumbing wholesale. Here is a link to it. http://www.plumbingsupply.com/autovent.html You still have to install one vent pipe through the roof but that’s better than one within 2 feet of every fixture. I would suggest the vent to be from the holding tank up through the roof. Then use the in line cheaters close to sinks, showers, etc. To reduce the odor outdoor coming out of the roof vent they make a pipe Vent filter also at Home Depot. These remedies should help on those HOT windy days when your out grilling by the motorcoach!
