  • Another Electrical Question

Posted by Davy on August 12, 2012 at 10:59 pm

I usually travel every Saturday but on our recent trip to Montana I was driving 4-5 days in a row and I noticed some things that I may not have noticed when driving on a weekly basis.

For instance, when I turn the key on there has always been a little two toned chime that sounded. One morning that sound was no more. The same day while driving I noticed my courtesy blinker lights were not working. That may not be the proper name for the lights but I am talking about the lights you flash when thanking a trucker or letting them know it is OK to merge. Mine are on the end of the turn signal switch.

Nothing else is affected that I have found. It seems like a blown fuse or relay that is on the “blink” and it seems that they are probably related since they quit the same day. Any ideas? I have checked the outside compartments by the drivers seat but none of the labeled relays and such seem to be the proper one. It could be that I just do not know what I am looking for.

I know this is something somebody here has probably encountered before and hopefully it is an easy fix. Thanks in advance for your help.

This is not likely to apply because of the changes in the driver’s electrical box, but I had a failure of the courtesy lights on my 87 coach and the problem was a failed relay. Don’t know about chimes.

Nobody knows what the problem is? Any ideas at all?

    DKO,

There might be some confusion based on your description of the courtesy lights.

On my coaches the button on the end of the turn signal stalk opens the circuit to the side marker, parking and clearance lights. If not pressing the button those lights remain on as long as I have my lights on and the button turns them off. In other words pushing the button does not turn them on or flash them, just the opposite.

Have you had a gander at the Prevost wiring diagrams? Sorry, but I just don’t know the XL.
I might be searching for a bad ground.

Right, Jon. That’s what I intend to say… When I push the end of the turn signal nothing happens.

I have not read the diagrams though that should be next. Wiring diagrams are NOT my strong point. I was hoping others with an XL had run into this and knew exactly where to look.

I have a strong suspicion if you go to your drivers electric box and look for the relay that is for the courtesy lights (I am not sure what they are called specifically) and you replace it your problem is solved.

I am guessing and going by memory but I think you will find the relay for that purpose has a failed coil and the coil is not opening the circuit when you want to flash the lights. If you do not have spares, Prevost is an excellent source for the Tyco (Bosch) relays. I found their prices significantly less than anyone else’s and you can usually have the parts overnight. If you want to verify the relay is bad, just swap it with any other.

These are pictures of the relay and breaker lists in the drivers electric box. Anything ring a bell as the right one?

    R14 – Night Light Blinker?

    R57 – Day Light Blinker?

I always have extra relays so I could put a new one in each place tomorrow if somebody does not see another possibility.

It could be those or even R-16. I would just replace them one at a time to see if it is any of them.

Going a little further from what you said you have have checked.

I would check the switch on the end of the stalk. On another forum I seem to remember someone having trouble with the switch/gizmo, in/on the steering column. You may just have a bad ground there> The column does get a lot of bending and turning so a wire may have gotten pinched or frayed or broken or or ….

Since the relay works, now you have to see if the relay is getting the signal to act/switch.

    Don’t everly complicate the search.

When the courtesy flash is initiated by pressing the button on the end of the turn signal stalk THE HEADLIGHTS ARE NOT FLASHED.

Using the button only cycles the parking and clearance lights on and off and only if they are turned on. They are used to acknowledge your appreciation when a vehicle you have passed signals it is OK to pull back into your lane but if your lights are not on the courtesy button does nothing.

    Jon,

I think we are clear on that. At least I am. I think repoer just said the wrong thing.

I mentioned it to a Prevost mechanic the other day when I was in there and he said the likely culprit is the switch. You or somebody else mentioned that as a possibility. I am Still interested in which relay controls it though.
