  • Annoying Alarm

Posted by Larry & Diane on October 9, 2016 at 12:24 am

After spending a day preparing the bus for a few days in Galveston, such as flushing the water tank, flushing the holding tank, checking fluids, air, etc, slides in and out and so on, when I started the bus up on Friday morning a really loud shrill alarm came on and I couldn’t find the source… no lights on the dash panel etc… so the search started… slides in and out again verified they locked properly… Levelling system…checked out all the bay doors were shut tight etc etc…. everything I could think of that might cause the alarm to go off. Nothing found !!

Turned engine off then key on and it started again without the engine even running… made some phone calls …. Jon ran me through a few possibilities (thanks Jon)… still nothing would stop it. Called Troy and Bill at Liberty only to get a recording that they were closed due to the hurricane (had forgotten about that at that time)… then called Jeff and got no reply.

In desperation we drove the bus to Rush Peterbuilt to have them put their scanner on the engine to see if they could figure it out and this is what they found :

    J1708-30- Transmission

System Diagnostic Code #1 – Special Instructions (S151/14 Active)

    Occurence Count 255

    SAE J 1939 Data Link – Abnormal update rate S231 9

With that the mechanic called Allison and the tech guru at Allison told him that the transmission was fine, however there is most likely a problem with the chassis commmunicating with the transmission…. and that we should have Prevost check the chassis for errors…. so we will have the bus at Prevost Houston Monday morning…. in the meantime Bill from Liberty called back and said that our coach was built with extra , extra loud alarms at the owners request and we could open the wiring chase by the drivers seat and find the wires and disconnect the alarm.

As annoying as the alarm is when key is on I elected to find the source (hopefully) rather than hide it… would hate to run into a big problem… at least we will remain aware of a problem getting to Prevost Houston… the bus ran great by the way.

Has anyone ever had a similar problem? Will keep you posted as we find things out on Monday.

This is the second time I have typed this… except the first post was better… have no idea why it didn’t post… sure hope this one does.

    Cheers, Diane

Good luck Diane with the fix & enjoy Galveston!

Anytime you can get Larry out of the office is a good thing. Now you just have to take away his favorite toy that is attached to his ear 24/7!

    Jeff….

Thanks so much… hope you can tell me more when you check so I can compare with Prevost Houston… and thank you for leaving Larry a message… he was on the phone the whole time with anyone that would listen so maybe it just didn’t make it through… but thank you so much.

    UPDATE !!

Good news… we are here at Prevost Houston and by 8 am alarm problem was solved… turns out we have Remco connection for towcar transmission cooler pump and that was the alarm we were hearing…. so they unplugged it and it’s all quiet now… so glad it wasn’t anything serious !!

Getting a few extras done while here then will hit the road home without that god awful noise !!

    Cheers, Diane
