Well, I got home yesterday after two nights in Springfield. I was very impressed by the knowledge and customer service demonstrated by the folks at American Fleet. The plan was to change the oil, steam clean the engine and do an overhead, while basically giving me an overall report on the health of the engine. I had a few squawks (primarily an inop fast idle and questionable jakes), and another list of “If I have any money left” items.
The good news is that the engine is in good health. It’s not pretty, so I really wasn’t sure. Even after a bath though, it still looks like a 35 year old engine. At least now I can monitor for any active leaks. I didn’t go in expecting any performance increase, so I didn’t follow Jon’s advice about logging before and after timed accelerations. I’m pretty sure it’s a little more peppy now, and I’ll thank you not to disagree. 🙂
I was prepared to take a little hit on diagnostics and repair of the fast idle and the jake brakes. I also set them to task figuring out some wiring issues related to the neutral safety switch and the starter circuit. Their experience was evident in the minimal shop hours spent on fixing each item, as well as their willingness to repair or rebuild existing parts rather than throw new parts at the problems. I was very pleased with the final bill.
As for the customer experience, they have a discount rate ($90/night after taxes) available for a brand new Candlewood Suites less than a mile away, and gave me a lift there. There is a Cracker Barrel and a Steak and Shake adjacent to the hotel. They were great about communicating with me, and stayed on schedule. I didn’t ask for any shore power, but I think others have mentioned that they’ll get you 15 amps if you ask.
Mark arranged my visit, but was out of town this week. I ended up dealing with Craig, who seemed to be running things. Danny was overseeing the work on my bus. Both Craig and Danny were great about communicating during my visit. I mentioned to Craig that we’d love to have them back on PC. He said they’d get involved again, but that they were extremely busy in the shop. I guess about 95% of their business is on the engine rebuilding side. There were a few shiny, newly-rebuilt Series 60 engines sitting on pallets next to my bus. I was unable to negotiate an exchange.
By the way, the flat rate on my overhead was $750. They did not need to pull the cradle. 8V92TA with jakes.
