Yes. Had a local repair person look at it and diagnosed partially restricted evaporator coils and suggested I get a new one, which I did. However, in the past I had a bad evaporator fan replaced (which was a no-brainer) and several people on the forum have reported issues with defrost timers etc which were also minor repairs. Did this happen all of a sudden or sorta creep up on you or did you have the fridge off and restart?

Go to Jeff’s, the Amana (I’m going to fail on you for sure) he is doing them almost weekly. The scrap pile looks like a Amana bone yard. Did one today and mine is in a couple days, they’re good at it. This will be my 3rd Amana replacement and trying to save a 14 year old fridge just isn’t worth the hassle.

Ditto, what Tom said. I nursed an Amana through three repairs and when I finally got rid of it and replaced it with a Bosch of the same dimensions I realized how dumb it was to keep trying to nurse a lousy refrigerator back to life.

Our Amana has made it through 24 years, and we feel lucky. But in two days it will be traded, along with the rest of the bus and we’ll probably never know how long it lasted.

I was having the same problem with my Amana refrigerator. Replaced the evaporator fan motor and the defrost thermostat and corrected the problem. Ordered both parts from Amazon:

Whirlpool 10513803 Evaporator Motor – $44.32

Whirlpool R0161088 Defrost Thermostat – $34.18

The Amana in our Liberty quite working sixteen or seventeen years into its life. I posted the problem to the Garage Journal Forum and one of the responders said that once I got the unit pulled out so I had access to it, he’d walk me through diagnosing the three possible problems that could easily be replaced (which probably include the items listed above). He said anything beyond those three would mean to junk it.

Then I talked to Jeff Rowe. He said, “Yes you could try to fix the easy things. But how much longer do you expect the refrigerator to work. What if the compressor fails when you’re on a long trip with $400 worth of food in it in the middle of nowhere?” So I decided to bite the bullet, bought the Kenmore that fits, and had a local, large RV dealer/sales operation replace it.

The Kenmore works, but came lacking a bunch of flat shelves and shelves in the door that we had to buy extra. I don’t think it’s as nice as the Amana, but gets the job done for us.

I wonder if there will be Amana’s still running at 25 or 30 years?

I know I’m going to regret saying this…ours still keeps beer ice cold!

The life of an Amana refrigerator is inversely proportional to the amount of perishables stored within it.

Beer, soda, wine, water etc. which are items that last forever, with and without the cold, if they fill the Amana, it is presumed the refrigerator will never fail. If however the refrigerator is filled with fresh vegetables, milk, ice cream, lobster tails, shrimp, fish and steaks then its life is measured in weeks. The risk of failure increases significantly if the value of its contents is substantial.
