  • Amana Refrigerator

Posted by Archived on February 3, 2014 at 8:38 pm

    I have
replaced various parts on my Amana and the fridge is working great. I
replaced the defrost timer last October and it’s designed to defrost
every 8 hours for a duration of about 20 – 30 minutes. What is
different now, the fridge periodically shuts off for 10 or 15 minutes
in between defrost cycles. When it shuts off, the temps are usually
36 and -5. The normal temps maintained are 38 and 0.

    My
question is, do these refrigerators normally shut off and then
restart based on temperature? I’ve always thought they run
continuously and only shut down for the defrost cycle.

No household fridge should be running 24/7. Maybe I don’t understand the question but your fridge “should” be cycling the compressor on and off on a regular basis.

We have a Jennair house model in our Liberty and it cycles on and off as needed.

I think Bill is right and all house models cycle.

Did you replace this switch on your overhaul ?

The Amana cycles on and off as normal operation.

However…….that is not always true and it depends on the specific refrigerator. We had a Bosch which was the best bus refrigerator we ever had. The technology behind it was the compressor never shut off, but it was electronically controlled to vary its output, slowing down when approaching the temperature setting to run at an “idle” speed, and ramping up its output when colder temps were required.
