  • Allison Transynd is the Way to Go!

    On our recent trip in the heat of summer out Allison HT755CR transmission (mated to my 8V92TA) started running hot. I was seeing temps of 230 and once 250 was tapped for a moment. Mind you we were running in the Nevada desert at a ambient temp of about 100f. But still not good. After quadruple checking levels and fussing for quite a while we decided to do a fluid change. Transynd is known to transfer hear a bit better than Dex. The fluid we were running was likely Dex, previous owner did the last trans service.

    Anyway, it completely solved the issue. I just ran a full day through 103f Nevada desert and never exceeded 200f on the trans gauge. I had the fluid changed in Savannah, GA at W.W. Williams. The entire trip back to the west coast my trans temps were comfortable! They actually have a few old two stroke techs and Dave there was amazing!

    He explained that Transynd fluid actually changed the warranty rate for Allison Transmissions in general.

    So, I wholeheartedly recommend the upgrade on spite of the expense. A night and day difference.

    While Transynd is an amazing fluid and helps protect and prolong the life of an Allison automatic, one of the biggest reasons the transmission mentioned above may over heat is excessive fluid.

    Even an amount as small as 1 quart in excess of the correct fill level can contribute to high internal transmission temps.

    Not only switch to Transynd, but as difficult as it is checking fluid levels using the dip stick, make certain the levels are not above the full mark.

    Would you recommend the Transynd fluid over the Allison TES 295 fluid?

    Same thing.

    The dip stick on the 755 transmissions especially with new clean fluid is very difficult to read.

    On the pan on those transmissions is a small plug that I think ison the driver’s side. It needs an allen wrench to remove it. With the transmission cold run the engine. If fluid runs out, leave the plug out until it stops running out. If none runs out add a little at a time until it does run out.

    That is the most accurate way to verify the correct flui8d level.

    Jon,

    the level is indeed difficult to check and the frastic difference on temp since the fluid change leads me to believe some other factor is in play. Only thing I can say is I checked the fluid cold and hot many, many times. Always within the indicators on the stick. Wish I had known about the plug.

    In any event I am a happy camper! Thanks for the input.

    So here is an interesting story to follow up my trans fluid change report.

    in line at a dump station and I put it into gear and nothing! I look and the dreaded fault light is blinking on the pad. I kill the engine and try again. Nothing. I get that sinking feeling you get when your wallet is seriously lightened and your afternoon is looking like it will extend for days.

    Looking behind the bus I see a lake of fluid. And quickly realize it is am of my nice new Transynd flowing across the pavement. We were towing our truck so we used it to pull the bus back so I could climb under and not have to swim under. I get in there and I see that everything is intact but I feel at the top of the filter and the sealing ring has popped out and allowed the fluid to simply pump out at great speed.

    I just happened to have a filter strap wrench and 2 gallons of cheap Walmart fluid in the bay. I reseat the trans filter with prong in correct position and add 2 gallons. Doesn’t even register on the do-stick. I go to Walmart and get 4 more gallons to add and I am touching cold-low on the dipstick. The bus is now moving and everything seems fine.

    I suppose having a few basic tools helped me out here.

    i am happy to report W.W. Williams in Savannah is standing behind their work and paying Smith Power locally to redo the job and flush in Transynd. The guys at W.W. Williams in Savannah are top notch. Tragedy narrowly averted. Kinda scary to think of what a mess this could have been if I were not at a rest stop dump station.

    Elliot, Pre synthetic atf Allison output shaft seals aren’t perfectly compatible with synthetic atf, or so I was told by the man that invented Transynd and the TES295 atf spec, Tom Johnson. Our 1995 Allison B500 eventually started leaking so I changed the seal with the new synthetic compatible seal, Allison# 29552705. So keep an eye on your output shaft seal.

    FUNNY…..I’m at WW Williams now (Columbia, SC) with a faulty output speed sensor. Coach keeps going into “Inhibit Shift”. Found a faulty wire. Having them rewire and also replacing the sensor as an added insurance policy.

    Elliot, I have a similar photograph from my first day (and about 150th mile) of ownership. Blown hose to the transmission cooler, resulting in loss of all transmission oil at highway speed. If there were any warning signs, I wasn’t savvy enough to see them. First indication was a reduction in power, and I was fiddling with the cruise control, so I didn’t notice it right away. I was unable to move in gear by the time I came to a stop at the top of the next off ramp. Maybe two miles from the first indication. Mine resulted in a rebuilt Allison, so if you and I ever cross paths, I’d like you to bless my bus, or give it a good rub, or whatever might transfer some of your good fortune to me.

    Funny thing is, I was just getting ready to start a thread about replacing old, dry hoses. I’m working on fuel hoses today after springing a leak. I should really check the rest of those other critical hoses too.

    So what year did they switch to the synthetic fluid ? Having the fluid change out is on my to do list. Mine is 1998 chassis.

    Synthetic atf was not installed from the factory in 1998.
    Send a sample to JG Lubricant Services for analysis and they will tell you all you need to know about your atf. The owner created the TES295 spec.

    FWIW, I have used synthetic atf in my 1989 and 1999 buses with no leaks. My experiences with both shift quality and running temperatures mirror those of the op. I now have 260,000 miles on my 1999, most of it towing at 65,000 to 70,000 pounds gross weight. Sold my 1989 at 300,000 miles; most towing at 55,000 lbs.

    Jon, I have never heard this way of checking fluid level. Is this still a viable way to do it? I have the HT755CR and am struggling trying to find my level correctly.
