  • Allison Transynd Fluid Sampling

Hey All, heads up for you guys with earlier coaches like mine (2001 Chassis) before Transynd was factory fill. When you have your fluid changed you will not get all of the old oil out, in fact it will probably take 2-3 changes. This was my experince along with many others with the 1000 series in the Dmax when GM put Dex6 in from the factory.

Anyways, my coach was switched in 2011 to Transynd, I just pulled the filters and all fluid I could get out of it and you could tell just by the look and feel that there was still a bit of the old oil mixed in. There was 2011 date codes on the Allison filters and I have the Prevost receipts so I know it was done. I put in new filters and approx. 7 gallons of new AES295 Transynd.

I also pulled a sample and sent in to JG Lubricants for a report. John one of the owners of JG is the retired Allison fluid engineer that came up with the AES 295 spec for Transynd. He was really active anwsering questions on the Duramax forums.

So I will report back what the sample says. Those of us with a retarder can sample the transynd and see how long we can run it…the typical run time is 150k miles but with lots of heat you may want to change sooner.

I have already experienced smoother 5-4 downshifts afer this last swap of fluid and I am sure my trans is nearly all tranysnd now with just a small amount of the old (5w-30 i think) oil left. I will report back when I get the sample results.

Got a surprising phone call from Tom the Allison fluids engineer who went over my sample with me last night. Learned a lot about the Allison and Transynd. As I suspected the sample indicated a fair bit of motor oil still in the fluid from the 2011 switch to Transynd.

Anyways, for you guys out there like me, I would make sure you do a couple changes to get the old motor oil out and make sure your trans is running 100% transynd. He told me even though the spec is 150k miles you can often times go quite a bit longer with it, just sample it maybe once a year. When they tested it they ran it in garbage trucks and left it in for years with lots of abuse and the fluid was still good.
