  • Allison Transmission RETARDER AIR SOLENOID

    ALLISON TRANSMISSION RETARDER TIP

If you have a Detroit / Allison combination (perhaps Volvo as well) and believe your transmission retarder does not work as well as it should or once did, REMOVE AND CHECK THE PICTURED AIR FITTING’S INTERNAL ORIFICE.

While working on the most recent bus, I found the metered supply air fitting going into the Allison transmission retarder air solenoid was leaking. (It is always supplied Prevost accessory (auxiliary) air whether or not the key is on or off)

I removed the fitting – it is an Allison metered air fitting – and found it heavily corroded due to past water in the aux air system.

This fitting has a ball point pen size hole in the center of the fitting that limits air supply to the retarder solenoid, and it was 90% clogged.

I cleaned the fitting, opened the hole back to its designed size and later the bus owner informed me his transmission retarder was now working like never before.

    P. S. – sorry I did not think to photgraph the actual clogged fitting. Tried unsuccessfully to find a photo online 🙁
