We lived in Fairbanks for 30 years. After selling our business in 1995 we drove the “highway ” 11 times before 2011. We did not have Prevost at that time but if we ever wanted to go back we would not hesitate to drive a Prevost up the road. Of course it would be better to drive for someone if they were paying for the fuel. Any takers?

We did the trip last year. You won’t see many Prevosts once you reach the start of the Alaskan Highway. We don’t regret taking the trip, but wouldn’t do it again. Been there, done that, too many other roads not travelled. I would suggest that you go up just after the last snow and return just before the first snow. This is so you can miss most of the road repair season. It’s a slow trip due to frost heaves and road work.

Alaska is beautiful. In my opinion much of what you will see can be seen in well south of Alaska. It really depends on why you want to go to Alaska. If you don’t mind some road construction, driving extremely slow for 20-30 mile stretches, and a dirty coach, then it’s just a personal decision.

Those are frost heaves but arctic speed bumps.

We were there a couple of years ago and remeber the front heaves. Got to take it easy and slow done. Took a 2000 Class C up insted a 2007 Ambassador with 4 slides but will be going againb in May 2014 in the 1996 Prevost CC we just bought. Not expecting any problems as far was driving the roads but was wondering if anyone has any ideas/suggestions for protecting the front of the coach?

We will be leaving sometime the end of May once are Son’s kids are out of school as they will be going with us in their camper. We will be going by way of the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, and then up through CA, OR, and WA. Will be staying west as much as possible and then will catch the Cassier Hwy up to the ALCAN just west of Watson Lake. Once we leave Alaska to return, we will probably take the ALCAN from start to finish and come back into the US in Montana. That’s a short version of how we plan to go. Even though communication is sometimes lacking, we should stay in touch and meet up somewhere once we both have a better idea of where we will be and when. Not than many Prevosts up, we should recognize each other.

We went to Alaska this year, summer of 2013, but did not take the Prevost.

In Dawson City, YT, we met someone with a 2000 Prevost. They were a friendly couple and we continued to cross paths with them until Denali. They took their bus over Top of the World Highway and said NEVER AGAIN! The bus slid in the mud at a construction site and a bulldozer had to pull them out, then make a new road for them to continue. In the area of steep drop offs, the wife drove their dinghy ahead and radioed back to tell her husband it was safe to continue to the next curve.

But from our experience driving our skinny Winnie and the reports from the Prevost owners, I don’t think you’ll have problems. Don’t try to take Top of the World Highway in your bus, do it in your dinghy. Be aware that many campgrounds only have 30 amp service. And most of all, slow down! Frost heaves can be deadly to your bus.

Drive slow and be careful! We didn’t take the coach on the over the road highway. I too heard of a Prevost conversion that slid off the road; maybe the same one. Here’s another coach that slid off the road and went about 20 feet down an embankment. No one hurt; they were lucky.

A minor correction: The Prevost to which I referred did not slide off the hill, it just got stuck in the mud. Not really a big deal, it happened to several RVs that day.
