air ride system problems

My wife and i decided we needed a bigger coach after spending 2 months in FLA last winter in our restored 93 Barth. We needed up with a 96 XL 45 that was original inside and out with a full redo planned. The owner had poured close to 30k into replacing the parts that need replacing at this age so the heavy lifting was already done. Ok here is what’s happening with my air ride system. Low level works as it should and it goes up and it goes down with the switch and if i pump it it very high front and back the front stays put and the rear will set high for about 2 minutes and something dumps the air out and lowers down a couple inch’s but not completely empty and the bags still have air in them as i can see them through the dock light hole but the bus is sitting low. Next when i put the coach in drive mode the front goes up sky high and the rear does nothing. I removed the new leveling valve arm and rotated it with nothing happening except a small amount of air coming out of the bleed port. 120 psi on the gauge also. I am pretty handy and we are doing a complete make over on the bus and its turning out quite nice! thanks in advance for any help

My first question is who is the converter?
My concern is you seem to make it sound like someone is messing with it or has messed with it and nothing you describe sounds like ay of the expected failure modes.
So answer a few starting questions.
If you put it in the driving position will it go there (bay doors all about 11″ above the ground)
If you use the level low can you put it up, down or in the approximate driving height?
Can you raise or lower the front, rear left and rear right individually?
All the above are with the engine running, and if they stay there with the engine running, that’s good, but if they change position after you set them let me know.
I hope this is not an additional problem but can you say with certainty the air system has been kept dry and there is no moisture in the valves?
I will try to respond quickly but I am on the road so there may be a delay.

ThanksWhat conversion do you have please?Your bus may not have SB96-14B done to it. In the search engine here on PC, do a search for “SB96-14B”, there has been a lot written about a rear that sags, so read up and let us know if you think it may apply to your bus. low level works fine, drive mode the front goes up past the desired 11” mark by a few inch’s easy and the rear does not go up at all and this is with the bus running.

OK, here is what I think I know.
Your issue has nothing to do with the system logic that caused air in the tags to dump air if accessory pressure dropped lower than about 30 PSI.
What I am not clear on is it sounds like you can make it do whatever you want with manually controlling level low, up or down.
That tells me the spool valves are responding to level low commands. But when you tell me the road or driving position when selected makes the front go up and the rear go down it could be a number of issues. My concern is you are not answering my original questions which wlll start pointing me to possible answers.
It could be the 5 port valves are screwed up with moisture and the moisture will not allow the spool to shift properly. It could be someone was messing with the ride height valve adjustments. It could be someone has gotten creative with a “repair”. Since you haven’t said the converter I still do not know if you have a motorhome shell, and entertainer shell or a seated coach shell that was converted. If it was a motorhome from the start was it a pure Prevost level low or was it modified by the converter?

Granted, a healthy aux system should not leak down from 110 psi to 30 psi in 2 mins. 2 days would be great. Mine leaks down to zero in 24 hours. Remember, the tag bags are the only bags that get dumped when the aux pressure drops to 30 psi. You can’t see the tag bags thru the docking light hole.I’m still thinking about the other issue(s). -
Since he said the engine is running when it does this system logic is not part of the problem. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the reverse logic, it just means it doesn’t seem to be the the problem in this case.
I find people with problems either withhold information, mis-state information or refuse to provide information. Since trying to do a forum diagnosis requires accurate information and answers to questions we end up having a very hard time trying to help. It doesn’t help when often a person with problems “shops” for answers. Far too often if multiple people are providing answers the person asking will always accept those that require the least effort or money, regardless of if they are correct.

It is a Royale by Monaco conversion and in very original condition and looks to be not modified in anyway. Yes in low level all good both front and back. Drive mode front goes up and back does nothing, does not move at all.

Getting closer.
That is an unmodified level low unless a previous owner got creative. For the moment let’s assume nobody messed with it.
If you raise the coach all the way up manually and then go to the road position what happens?
If you lower the coach all the way down and go to the road position, what happens?
If the answer in both cases is nothing, look in the steer compartment and look for a manifold with small diameter air hoses. It should have 5 valves in the manifold with red caps on them. The center solenoid valve coil has a high failure rate because it is always energized when driving.
Put the coach up or down, and then switch the solenoid valve coil with ay other one in the stack. Do not reverse wires. let the go to the original positions. Just swap coils. Be careful you don’t drop and lose the “C” clip.
If the coil has failed switching it with another should allow the coach to go to the correct driving height. If it does not we are out of low hanging fruit and now you are really going to get your hands dirty.

Pictured below is my bus level low “5 stack” setup. Yours may be different? Yours may be all 24v? But, you see how I have labeled their correct position in the stack and voltage?
If someone working on it put a 24v coil where a 12v belongs it will act up intermittently. 12v going to a 24 v coil is not good. There should be a voltage label somewhere on each coil. Pull ea off and look them over. Get a multimeter out, activate ea coil with the level low switches and check to see that each coil is getting the correct voltage, 24v or 12v. This was the case with my bus when we first got it. Get a multimeter and check eaAlso, if someone had the coils off the stack for whatever reason and put 1 or more back in the wrong position? this would not be good.Keep feeding us info, we haven’t spent any of your $ yet 🙂 -
Don, his are all 24 which is why I asked the converter question and did not confuse the issue any more than it already is by introducing a discussion of coil voltages.
To be honest my gut says if it isn’t the coil it might be moisture

testing now with motor running in low level mode raised up to 11” front and back and has stayed there for 10 mins, switched to drive while running and no change so far in ride height

i had the center coil off and checked it, it is working as i cracked the air line coming out of it and it hissed air

i shut the motor off in drive mode and after maybe 2 minutes the rear air released and now its sitting at around 9” and it sounds like a goose quacking every few seconds right before it dumps the air. it is not on bottom there is still air in the bags. front is still up
