Air Leak
Posted by Jim/Chris on August 8, 2019 at 12:53 amWe are looking at a bus whose front end sinks in a matter of hour up to a day. Rear end stays up fine. Level low works, but hadn’t tested the HWH leveling. It’s a 2000 Featherlite XL rivet coach. It has new airbags but we suspect either a connection or the front Norgren or maybe the 5 valve under driver seat. Any hunches?

I know you are happy now but wait till the gum dries out and gets hard and falls off the fitting.
Gum is cheap and plentyful around here !!!!!
I wouldn’t go any where else but ETLC.

Those folks at ETLC are from TN. How can people with one tooth chew gum to put on leaky fittings and air bags?
Do they get folks from GA to chew it for them?
-
Chewed gum is imported from GA where most have a complete set of chompers.. The downside is the 35% import fee Trump has put in place, and rightly so, to discourage the TN one toothers from sending their gum to LA where the chew process is cheap and controlled by Buddy.

I won’t speak directly to your air leak issue as It’s not my strong suit and could have several causes, BUT, I will say this is such a minor problem in the grand scheme that it should have virtually no impact on your decision to purchase other than to realize the bus may need some maintenance.

There are a number of potential leak points and since it is isolated to the front the process to isolate the leak is relatively simple.
If it is an air bag leaking, especially if the leak is associated with the bottom can that will be the hardest place to find a leak, so start with all the fittings, then check the Norgrens and if everything checks out, you are left with the need to give the air bags a serious look.
I am not familiar with the 2000 H3 chassis, but I suspect you have 2 3 port Norgens over the front axle and 2 on the bulkhead in the steer compartment. The bottom Norgren in the steer compartment has an exhaust plug in the bottom. Remove that and put in a pipe plug. If it still goes down, keep working back towards the air bags, disconnecting fittings and pressurizing until you reach the point where leaks stop. I use a hose with an air fitting, shut off valve, air pressure gauge, and at the other end adapters to connect to each hose or fitting.

Joel. No, an air leak didn’t stop us. Jon, Truk, Joel we agreed to to buy the above mentioned coach. 1999 shell, called a 2001 Vogue two slide with rivets. We get it Aug 28. So we will be coming to the September seminar without an Airstream or Bigfoot truck mount. We traveled to Phoenix to see an H, and it wasn’t how it photographed. So, we headed to Oregon, to look at the featherlite Vogue. We left last Thursday and by today once we are home, our truck camper will have traveled 3,344 miles for bus shopping. Whew

When I changed all my air bags it had a bunch of push style air fittings that leaked so as recommenced by the the good people on the forum I replaced them with a good compression fitting, the fronts have the plastic fender liner on the fitting so who ever put on the bags might of not changed the push fittings because of liner. It is a little harder to tighten compression fitting but worth it.
