Air filter restriction indicator
I’m looking for information on perfect, reasonable, and replace when it comes to air filters……found a little device on Amazon that screws into a port on the fresh air inlet tube. It is basically a non-resettable vacuum gauge that records the max suction (in inches of water column) your system has seen. Or in other words, it indicates how restricted your filter is with particulate, etc.
The device is calibrated from 6 (no restriction) to 20 (RED – Replace your filter now)….does anyone have experience with this? Is 20 inches of water too restrictive? (Jon, I suspect you have some experience with these)

I have used them on every coach and find I change air filters when I feel guilty, and not when they need it. Once I let one go long enough to get a slight movement on the indicator, but other than that it seems like every 3 or 4 years I change filters.
If I remember right DDEC adjusts fuel flow based on available intake air so unlike the old days when a dirty air filter was accompanied by black smoke the only change is a loss of power. But long before that happens you will have changed the filter.

Have you seen any “specification” or “standard” on maximum flow rate restriction? Sounds like your experience would suggest a longer interval for air filter changes……

I’ve never looked into it. As long as I was getting the turbo boost I was used to seeing I assumed all was right.

First, the device is reset able, push the yellow button on the end and it resets to 0.
If memory serves me correctly the max air intake restriction is 25″.
I feel that is too much so a 20″ gauge would be my choice.

Different years/models may have different replacement specs. I replace at 20″.
Can’t remember where I looked up spec…probably DD or Prevost. I think my spec was 25 also but…
