  • Air Cooled Alternator

Posted by Archived on July 28, 2012 at 9:03 am

    Folks,

A few weeks ago someone mentioned that they upgraded from a DelcoRemy 50DN to another brand. I think it was a German made air cooled alternator and it was a drop in replacement for the 50DN. I can’t find the thread. Does anyone know who made the replacement alternator? Thanks!

David, you don’t mention the year or engine, but Prevost has been replacing some 50DNs with a pair of Bosch air cooled 24 volt alternators which is now standard on coaches. Some conversions have as many as 4.

If my memory is correct they are 140 amp each. I know they can be made to fit the Series 60, don’t know about an 8V92.

I assume you have a series 60 as the 50DN on my old 8V92 equipped coach was never touched in 300,000 miles! Not so on the S60.

Penntex Industries (they have authorized distributors all over the country; penntexusa.com) make a bolt-on conversion using the same voltage regulator. Next time I have issues with my 50DN, I’m going to try this; no experience yet.

The S60 can be converted to the multiple Bosch set-up but it’s expensive ($4500 approx for the parts kit incl 2 alternators) and I do not believe it is equipped with an adjustable voltage regulator which is desirable for motorhome use.

I believe Niemann (or something like that name) also makes an air cooled alt which will adapt and I also recall hearing their voltage regulator is actually ‘smart’ and can be programmed to allow the engine alt to properly charge agm batts. Someone else will have to jump in for info on this.

The alternator you are referring to is a Niehoff alternator. They are an excellent product from experience, and can be found at http://www.ceniehoff.com. They should have a product that should drop right in.

Thanks everyone for your help. I very much appreciate it. Let me do a little more homework on Niehoff and I’m bound to have a few more questions. Thanks again. David

Travelite, I made a small post awhile back about installing a Niehoff C802 (450amps 24 volts) C803(500amps 24volts) This is a great air cooled alternator… Balmar decided to help me out and build a SMART 3 stage programmable regulator for these alternators.

Prior to this I went and purchased a new Delco 50DN. With that said, if anyone needs one let me know..
