Air Bag replacement 98 XLE (Front)
Hit a wall! Have air line loose(off). Nuts off . Air bag sideways in mount. How does it come out? The book says it will just slip out. It is actually horizontal! I have the IFS suspension. The so called easy jobs seem to make you feel dumb! Bob

Afterlooking at new one . Removed bottom cone. The new one went in top first horz- replaced cone. Stood up bag and bolted in place. Old bag was rust welded to cone. Book said remove top plate; I still don’t understand that one. I took sawzall and cut old bag in half to remove. Install time/bolt up less than 10 minutes. Next one took 40 minutes total. First removal — yesterday 3 hrs plus allot of **** and this message..1 hr today. Bob

Glad you worked that one out Bob, I haven’t done an IFS yet and couldn’t offer any suggestion. When I do mine, now I know what happens when rust takes over.

was between rubber and lower cone/bag housing. I just cut bag in half. You could get lucky and get it to come apart. In a idea world it would!. Bob

I just gave up on mine. Replaced all the others, but couldn’t get the front ones out, and the new ones look even bigger! I am going to have Prevost Jax do it when I take it in for a delamination check.
For a brief moment I thought about cutting out the old one…..I’m glad I didn’e. It’s going to have to get me to Jacksonville!

For anyone contemplating a front air bag replacement on an IFS coach I can say with certainty the shop manual is incorrect when it says to just collapse it and pull it out.
Karl and I spent a lot of time trying different positions before resorting to trying to push the upper A frame up out of the way. Even with a 4 ton porta-power pushing up on the ball joint threaded end we could not break it free so we quit rather than damage something. If we could raise the upper A frame by as little as 1″ air bag replacement would be easy.
When I replace the air bags on mine I will be less concerned about how much force I apply to break the ball joint free of its socket. All the air bags in the rear were much easier and quicker to access and replace. But of the six hose connections in the rear, at least 4 leaked so plan on having a source for new fittings. The inventor of push in air fittings should be spanked.

I would just like to clarify that all positions tried were only in the context of changing air bags. That is all.

I’m glad it was just not me!? It does work. Simple solution. and easy -would like to know how prevost shop does it.? Can’t see disturbing suspension to do the job;I did think about it but this ended up being so easy. Bob
