Air Bag Belt Tensioners
Our coaches likely have air powered belt tensioners. Later model coaches use miniature air bags that inflate and tighten the belts. They are a service item and the entire system has been a source of ongoing maintenance. This article is a small “how-to” regarding air bag replacement and offers an alternative system to be considered.

Just replaced my belt tenisoner bags and it was a little fun to do but I like the idea of getting rid of all that system. What was the purpose of the bellows system? its just another thing to go wrong, Why did Detroit do that?

It might be a commercial seated bus driven decision. If a belt fails a driver with a spare belt can replace one with no tools in a minute or two.
I only modified my system because there has not been a part of the belt tensioning system that has not required some form of maintenance or replacement over the years, including leaking bellows, leaking fittings, bad check valves, leaking valve, leaking pressure regulator, etc.
If my revised system works I have more effort required to change a belt, but except for belt changes, zero maintenance.

No I did not know about check valve and where is it located ? I just looked at a drawing of air system and I did not see a check valve

I’m liking Jon’s idea of replacing belt bags with metal tensioners my 4 way valve at regulator is leaking and it is not repairable and Prevost wants $250 for that valve ouch!
