  • Adding a 24v belt-driven alternator to 8V92TA?

Posted by Chad on August 1, 2022 at 9:54 pm

I’m pulling my gear-driven 50DN for rebuild or replacement, and am seriously leaning toward replacing it with a belt-driven alternator mounted in a more accessible position. I’m having trouble finding much information about such an installation, so I’m hoping to hear about the converter-installed alternators on some of your coaches. I assume I would need to fabricate a custom bracket, but am not eager to reinvent the wheel. Any pointers to off-the-shelf solutions would be appreciated, as well as details on your own custom set-ups. After deleting my OTR air and heat, I just can’t see a good reason to reinstall this 240A alternator in such an inaccessible spot.

My ’88 Country Coach has 2 separate belt driven alternators with the 8V92. They were both on the right side of the engine compartment (viewed from the rear) and there were just some welded brackets that supported them as they are pretty light. One was set slightly forward of the other so the pulleys lined up correctly with the 3 belt takeoff mounted to the engine. Wish I still had a picture of the engine but maybe you can find someone with a CC of that era to see if they have a similar setup.

Bill, were your brackets mounted to the engine or to a point that was not supported by the engine cradle? I read a post somewhere that the alternator shouldn’t be mounted to the engine or anywhere supported by the cradle, but that seems backwards to me.

Bob – I did find some descriptions of installations meant for trucks, but they were mounted on the back of the engine, which is the front for a bus. Accessible for a truck, but roughly in the same spot as a gear-driven 50DN for a bus.

I don’t know if this is still a need but I have an 8v71 with a belt drive DN50 setting on the floor right now that I could get a pic of.

It came out of an MCI and I think it is mounted to the cradle

I would really appreciate a photo when you get a chance. I have put this on hold a bit while I worked on other projects, but I need to choose a course of action pretty soon. Thanks!
