  • AC Compressor

Posted by Art on April 24, 2021 at 9:44 am

I have a feeling my AC compressor is loosing Freon from the shaft seal, because I have been getting a fine spray of oil on the inside of rear door on engine cover, I thought it was the gear box but it looks clean. Never had to deal with ac compressors before, Buy from Prevost? any improvements on compressors. Stay with same one? It has 134a in it so that’s good.

Sometimes a fine mist on the engine doors could be fuel. It is very hard to isolate a leak that tends to not drip or spread all over its source so unless it has a distinct smell or color it is hard to identify and find the source.

Where would a fuel leak come from? It is right behind superior gear box

Have a sop install a dye and you can see where the leak is

Art the compressor is a york style ,Tecumseh. This is common heavy truck part ,BUT keep in mind it’s probably a 24 volt clutch .I believe you could use 12 volt with a relay from 24 volt and signal to clutch being 12 volt .good luck

They’re cheap Art, about 200 bucks or so at Fleetpride and other truck sources, just make sure to get the voltage correct and ports on top, there are some differences. With my buses I just changed them out every 2 years, they don’t last long.

Art, you can follow the fuel flow from the fuel pump. On my first coach with the 8V92 I spent hours trying to find the oil leak that was misting the inside of the doors and it turned out an eighth of a turn on a fuel line fitting solved the problem.

I should have sniffed the “oil” on the doors before looking for oil leaks because it would have saved a whole lot of time.

I finished replaced all my coolant lines yesterday and I drove bus 30 miles, tested dash heat worked good got all the air out of it, Turned on AC it seemed to work fine and I know it wasn’t many miles but rear door was clean, On the 6th of May we go to Race track for a track day it’s 80 miles each way so I will keep an eye on it. Thanks’ for the help
