  • ABS code 273

Posted by Gerald on December 9, 2015 at 8:41 pm

I was puttering around in the compartment below the driver’s seat checking for aux air leaks while the engine was running and saw the red ABS indicator light flashing. Interesting. Did not know I had such a light. There is a switch next to the light marked (Blinker, Normal, MPSI). It was on “Blinker”.

Came home and looked up the Meritor ABS codes and sure enough, the code 273 indicates “right rear drive wheel ABS sensor circuit failure”. It says to check sensor, circuit or connector.

I did have all air bags replaced recently. Maybe something got disturbed. What should I be looking for?

    Thanks, Gerald

3 greens, if you’re lucky (given your vintage you’re probably not) and it’s an external sensor, you can usually just tap on it. If it’s an internal one, unless you want to spend a lot of the green stuff, the light will become your constant companion. Geo.

What Geo said. If it is the sensor at the wheel just a tap on the end of it usually resets it into the correct position, however some vintages of coaches had the ABS sensor for the drive axle internal to the axle, and access to the sensor is labor intensive.

    Time to trade coaches.

Finally took a look at the ABS sensor location. From what I can tell there is one on each side of the differential housing. Looks like my ABS sensors are still external. Wiring looks fine. I cleaned the contacts. If that does not fix it I’ll try the “tap”. Do you tap on the sensor inside the plastic housing?

Wrt trading, we have gotten quite fond of our “oldie”. It takes a while to get to know the bus and catch up on deferred maintenance. Would hate to start all over with a new bus.

The ones you tap are about 1/4 ro 3/8 diameter, and they look like they are pushed into the hole. In reality there is a serrated spring steel sleeve around them that holds them in place. Yours are not the ones to be tapping.

Gerald, I kinda figured that’s what you had. We’re in the same boat and since it doesn’t affect the operation, I’ve just gotten used to the the light and re-setting my message center every start. I know BA fixed his and it’s pretty pricey. Geo.
