  • A funny thing happened on the way to the forum …

Well, more precisely, on the way to Elkhart, where we are staying at the Elkhart Campground.

Well, so we are driving towards ElkhartElkhart. Nice weather, leisurely ride, terrible road conditions on the highways in MI and IN and all of a sudden, somebody starts blaring his horns at us.

I had just passed an on-ramp but had not seen anybody entering. So first thing was to see if somebody was in the blind spot and if I was running him off the road. Nobody there.

The honking continues, on and off. So I look behind me to see if somebody is flashing headlights at me. Nobody there.

I am stumped and so is Gabi.

The honking continues on and off and I am wondering where the jerk is that keeps honking his air horns at us.

Come to find out, the jerk is me.

Somewhere along the way, something happened at around the steering wheel. Every time I was correcting towards the right or making a slight right turn, the horns started blaring.

Not necessarily surprising because the road conditions around here are bad. Feels like driving miles and miles over cracked concrete surfaces. Perhaps, something got shaken loose.

We pulled off the highway and I started looking at the fuses and relays. I then picked-up the phone and called Jeff since I know he works on Saturdays. He told me which relay to pull but that did not stop the action. I did then remove the collar around the steering column and found a disconnect. Hallelujah, the honking stopped.

Meantime, I have removed more of the steering column enclosure and found a broken ring that sits right below the steering wheel. A Volvo part. Unfortunately, removing that ring which seems to be some kind of a shield did not do any good. Reconnecting the wires, the horn started honking again when I turned the wheel to the right.

Searching for this part (Volvo #3176446) I have found one in Greece @ 2 Euros … 🙂

I have yet to find it somewhere on these shores.

I do not know if getting this “ring” will be the solution to this problem.

Any suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated!

Meantime, we will have to rely on the train horns … 🙂

    Cheers,

    Ronald

Cracked me up, I can just imagine the frustration that only those that has had it happen can relate. Mine was the freaking air horns.

Good luck on the part Ronald, you could always just clamp a button on the side of the steering column.

I think for most of the people on this forum a Clarabell horn might be the preferred type.

Only old farts like Tom know what I am talking about.
