  • 8V92 physical exam?

Is there some sort of test that can be done to determine the internal condition of an 8V92, like maybe an oil test or anything else?

Available most major suppliers-Freightlinner-truckstops-oil-jobbers,NAPa just follow directions and they will tell you how much metal and other things like fuel -antifreeze that shouldn’t be there. Not a high dollar cost. Base line then compare to next oil change. I pulled the pan off my old 8V92 at 100,000 miles and only had 1/10,000th bearing wear. Your allowed 7/10,000th. Probably roll bearings in at 300,000 thousand and get 500,000 if you take good care of it —or more. Do it your self bearings under $300 and 4 hrs labor.rods and mains. Big torque wrench! Bob

A oil sample test is good but not much if you haven’t been doing those at each oil change, best to drop the pan and check the rear main and number 5 rod bearing then inspect the cylinder walls, pistion and rings through the air box inspection covers you can see all except the oil rings.

Next time you are due for a oil change it is not a big or expensive job during a normal service

A dyno test from a DD dealer will give you a ton of information also about the engine also

    good luck

Two experts have answered and they are spot on. You as an owner can do a lot more than you realize without picking up a tool. Look at the gauges. Are all the indications where they should be, and if so burn those images in your mind so if the gauges start to depart from normal, (even 1/2 needle width of movement can be significant) find out why.

When you check your oil is it cloudy? Do you get a faint odor of diesel fuel? Those are clues that need follow up.

Is the oil consumption stable? Is it smoking at times when it never did previously? Has your fuel mileage changed?

One more thing that few owners take as seriously as needed………The two stroke engines for some reason are sensitive to cooling system maintenance. Change the coolant as often as required and use only coolants that meet the Detroit spec. Keep an eye on SCAs with test strips.

An 8V92 is a great engine. If you feed it clean air and clean fuel, and keep it clean internally by changing the oil routinely, and you never ever overheat it you may never wear it out.
