  • 8V92 idle issue

Posted by John on October 14, 2019 at 7:53 pm

Looking for guidance from knowledgeable 8V92 folks with an intermittent and nagging issue. With the engine warmed up and high idle engaged, flipping the toggle switch back to low idle results in a slow, gradual decrease in rpms, instead of the usually quick and immediate response to normal idle of approx 650 rpms. Once at low idle, the rpms frequently oscillate/pulse/vary 200-300 rpms. Changing the toggle switch from low to high idle results in a quick change to the usual high idle of approx 1100 rpms but it sometimes revs. On several occasions I was not able to disengage the high idle despite flipping the toggle switch repeatedly (which had no effect). Also, intermittently with the transmission in gear, the engine idling, (high idle off) the coaches will attempt to lurch. Fuel filters have been changed with no effect. No other obvious symptoms. Thanks

A couple of thought come to the top of my mind.

First the buffer spring needs to be adjusted.

Second, an injector is starting to stick. “Broken Back” racks are used in these to prevent a runaway, but one sticking injector can cause the issue you mention.

Thanks Mikee. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Hi Linda and John, My 8V92 doesn’t have the same issues as yours but of course my bus is much newer than yours.

I have no hesitation going from high to low idle and when you said “intermittently with the transmission in gear, the engine idling, (high idle off) the coaches will attempt to lurch.” I’ve not witnessed that either… I wish I could be of help because I feel your pain. Any chance it’s the switch? I had a switch where the connection was loose and caused all kinds of trouble.

    Harry,

Thank you for your always “knowledgeable” and helpful insights. Hey, did you ever get that water leak fixed? I’d be worried the compartment floor would be rotted away by now!

Hello again Linda a John, I primarily chimed in to help get others to jump in with their thoughts as you mentioned earlier. The water leak you mentioned I wiped out with towels as best I could and ran a fan into the bay for a few hours. So I got it dried out as quickly as I could to at least minimize an damage done by the water. I think I’m ok there.

It’s one of the items I need Jeff to look at when I get it up there. BTW let us know when you have the Hi/Lo idle figured out?
