8 V-92 Pyrometers
While replacing our driverside manifold gasket, we broke the pyro probe. Well, tried to remove it, so we could take the manifold up to our shop to clean it up. And after reinstall, an unknown hairline crack materialized, resulting in a piece of the manifold dropping out in the street when we came back from our test drive, which showed really no improvement in Turbo Boost or overall performance with the deteriorated manifold gasket, so we knew something wasn’t right.
Anyone have ideas, thoughts, or a source for replacement pyrometer sensor probes that screw into the manifold itself and relays the exhaust temps to Prevost installed VDO dash guage. Prevost part # 561157 according to Elgin Parts, is obsolete. Guess we can run with one pyro on the curbside bank, or eliminate them both and just watch coolant temps. Prevost Parts in Elgin says, same pyro for Series 92 and Series 60’s when so equipped. The order is placed, but Tom at Elgin won’t know until next week if actually goes thru.

All you need is the sensor and if you can mate up the one used on a Series 60 to your manifold you should be good to go. I always considered the EGT readout helpful. Although I never worried about an upper limit and had never worried when I smashed the throttle and got up to 1100 on a long hard climb, I did look for them to run about equal temps. Unequal temps when driving would be a potential indication of a problem with combustion on one side of the engine or another. The pyros were my visual clue as to the efficiency of my Jake brake. If I saw about 300 degrees when the Jake was engaged, life was good.
If you have the gauge I encourage you to get the sensors. Just don’t tighten them as tight next time.

We have the 60 series Detroit. About a year ago, my pyro gauge quit showing temp. Still doesn’t today. But, as usual I throw parts at it until I get it. And as usual, buy two times what I really need. So I have a new spare sensor probe on the shelf. When I get home today, will post again here with the part number.

What I have is Prevost part number 56-1157 discontinued = Hewitt Industries part number 015-002. I paid $325 plus shipping. Hewitt is in Los Angeles. Let me know if you want mine.

oh rats. We ordered a pair thru Oreillys from VDO, who made our gauge this morning. They will arrive this Friday. Prevost Elgin was trying to help us out too, but said it maybe the middle of September delivery if the order would go thru. I called them back this afternoon, to cancel order. Thanks
