  • 6 way plug

Does onyone know if liberty installed a brake wire in their 6 way plugs? I went to install a brake controller for the trailer

I ordered. I took apart the 6 way plug in the rear and found a blue wire in the center of the plug. That is where a blue wire should be and coming from the brake controller. That wire is the one that is powered when you apply the brakes thus applying power to the trailer brakes. This wire does indeed powered when the brakes are applyed. My only concern is how do you adjust the amount of power to the trailer like you would on a brake controller. Rick

That’s a good question for Troy. They did not on my 87, and I don’t know if they did on my 97, but on my current coach it has a brake controller as well as provision for a camera on the rear of the trailer. I just don’t know if those were added after the fact or were part of the standard features. The rear camera display is set up for a selectable camera, rear of coach or rear of trailer.

    Rick,

Normally the blue wire is surge brake, but it’s not in the middle. The middle should be 12v for trailer interior lights or for charging the break away battery and hot all the time.

    Rick,

The wiring diagram provided for by Tom is correct. However, there’s is an alternative wiring scheme that’s not common and is apparently how your’s is wired.

Most converters have their own interface to the trailer connector that isolates the coach’s circuits from the tow. They usually use relays or diodes along with fuses to to this. Some also have options to support alternative methods of powering the brake and turn lights. Country Coach puts their interface in the engine electrical control box over the engine, others very near the hitch and I’m sure there are other places. It would seem an easy question for Liberty.

FWIW, that blue wire brake signal may rely on an intelligent brake controller in the tow and not one in the coach. If you are getting full battery voltage on that wire regardless of how much brake pedal is applied I’d say that’s what you have.
