  • 50DN 12V voltage spikes

Posted by Archived on September 5, 2023 at 2:02 pm

Seems my 50DN alternator isn’t working properly. It’ll run for 10 minutes and pump the 12V fine but then I’ll get voltage spikes and my custom Wakespeed controller shuts it down. I removed this limitation and found out the alternator spiked to 20V and fried my Firefly control panel and microair thermostat.

Odd thing is the plate on the alternator is rusted out but looks like its a 24V 270a model and not a 12V. I’m wondering if my converter (nashville coach) modified it in some way to pump out 12V and now its not working right. Not sure if this is the issue or the alternator is just fried and needs replaced/rebuilt.

I think you’ve stumped the group.

This happened with my wakespeed ws500. I put the original regulator in and was 12v. Bought a 24v external regulator and it’s putting out 24v fine.

Problem is I’m now not trusting the alternator at all so not sure what to do.
