Rod,

The towing capacity is 10,000 lbs and 1,000 lbs of hitch weight. I took those numbers directly out of the Owners Manual for my 2001 Liberty XL2.

One important thing to recognize when towing capacity becomes a concern is that the tongue weight limit for the hitch is based on a specific distance from the bumper. As important as the limits are always remember the greatest potential for damage to the coach comes from vertical loads on the hitch in excess of the limits. The structure handles straight line (towing) forces relatively easy but is far less tolerant of excess vertical loads because the structure was not designed to handle those loads.

I am not suggesting anyone exceed limits but do want to point out it is very easy to exceed the tongue weight limits and still be within the towing limit.

I think it’s. 8 inches from the pin that’s a 1000 pounds tongue weight . Further back the less tongue weight

My coach vintage has a plaque rivited to the tow bar cross member and visable looking down behind the rear bumper and inside the engine doors. I would think all models would be similar.

I seem to remember a post indicating that there was a change by Prevost to the 20,000# hitch on the newer chasis, not sure on that, but seems to me.

Treat all coaches on an individual basis as a previous owner may indeed have changed the hitch to the 20,000#.

My 97 Liberty had the same plaque JIM has. Same limitations as well. My current coach has a 20,000 pound limitation with a 1500 pound hitch limitation.

I do not. To add to the confusion I checked with Prevost on my coach and found it was delivered to Liberty without a hitch and apparently Liberty installed the hitch. That means it is possible hitch capacities could be coach specific. Prevost has had 10,000 pound limits as standard, but offered 20,000 pound as an option and they have retrofitted heavier capacity hitches so there is no standard.

A 20,000 pound capacity hitch involves changes to the engine cradle.

I did have the engine cradle changed in February 2012 on my 1995 XL. I had it done at Prevost Nashville. It was a huge job but took me from 10,000/1,000 lbs to 20,000/2,000 lbs. I do not remember the exact cost. It is probably posted on the forum some where. I do remember that their estimate was right on target.

During the winter I am towing a 2500 lb car but the rest of the year I pull a trailer. I was upgrading trailers in 2012 and in order to do so I had to do the upgrade. I was not willing to take a chance on the damages that were sure to come from exceeding the limits.

I am glad I made the change.
