1994 H3-40. Need radiator asap
Hello All,
I hate that this is my first post.
I just bought, yesterday, a 1994 H3-40. From a church group.
It could be coincidence, but I find it hard to believe.
It was almost straight water in the radiator, the outlet that was left it’s so corroded that 40+% of the fins are just gone. I find a dribble of coolant coming out at inch above the bottom. After some thought, I thought best option was to pinch and roll and pinch again with some vice-grips. I thought that would get me to a larger city, or maybe even home, it was only one row of one core, in this monstrosity of a radiator, that would be just fine to get to a better place. This did not go as planned. As soon as I tried to pinch it, it just squeezed out of the vice-grips. I touched it with a gloved hand, it’s like powder! I barely touched it and ended up destroying to more rows!there is some light to mild rust in the bus, on the mild steel pieces, but no visible corrosion anywhere on the stainless steel surfaces.
I also found a loose clamp at the lower connection point. I think this leaked for a long while, no coolant handy when needed led to using water, topping off with tap water every two weeks with a gallon or three. No anti corrosion properties left after two to maybe 5 years??? This led to just the radiator, and its mount complete rusting and corroding completely through.
I do find it difficult to think they didn’t know this issue existed. At least it runs like a crazed beast! I love the power in this thing!
The radiator is basically gone. Not sure how we made it as far as we did, a whole 30 miles. Thank goodness diesels take a bit to warm up!
Does anyone have a resource for a new/GOOD used radiator in the larger vicinity of Roanoke,VA
Thanks,
Don
