  • 12.7 Series 60 Detroit Oil Pressure

Posted by Glenn on June 19, 2014 at 5:11 pm

For those of you using a mechanical gauge or VMSpc or similar glass dash getting data from ECM what oil pressures are you getting at Idle when hot (190*) and running down the road say 1500 rpm?

Mine shows just a touch under 50 on the gauge. The DDEC reader says 53 typically when up to temp at 1500 RPM

    45 or 50 pounds.

45 to 48, pretty steady at 1500 to 1600 RPM.

I’m in the 45 to 50 group with that motor.

Ok, that is in line with what I am seeing at cruise but I am actually more concrned with idle.

What do you guys get with a warm (190*) engine at idle….not fast idle just 600 RPM??

    30-35psi at idle when hot

Mine will be on the top side of the red mark at low idle when hot, whatever psi that is. A friend of mine with an ’03 chassis, has a smaller red mark on his guage, so at idle, it’s not on the edge of the red like mine is. Looks better anyway

I remember the Prevost guys at the Tampa rally saying that there are “Fudge factors” built into the guages.

If the oil pressure is too low, with the DD computer sound an alarm or shut the engine down?

I agree there might be some gauge error so if that is the fudge factor it makes sense. As I posted earlier my needle at cruise speed of 1500 is just shy of 50 PSI, but the DDEC reader shows it at 53 PSI.

My temps on the gauges were difficult to interpret but looked like they agreed with the DDEC reader so I don’t know if there is in fact a fudge factor on all gauges.

To answer Dick’s question our engine computers on the Detroits will shut down the engine for only three reasons. Low Coolant, low oil pressure, high coolant temp. There are a number of issues that will cause the engine to operate at derated power and a lot more that will light the CEL (check engine light)

If I get a SEL (stop engine light) it has my immediate and undivided attention. When that light comes on you need to be looking for the shoulder of the road. If I get a CEL I keep driving while trying to determine if all gauges are within normal range. I usually look for a rest area, truck stop or some other safe place to park while I hook up my reader to see what is going on. With the exception of when I needed to change the CAC I haven’t had a CEL or SEL on the last two coaches (a ten year span). The first coach which was DDEC I was frequently throwing codes, but few of them were of consequence.
