12/24 voltage seperation
I have a 91 Marathon with 8 4D agm house batteries configured for both 12 and 24 volt circuits. Can someone tell me what circuits are 12v and what circuits are 24 volts in my house wiring?
I also have four chassis batteries which I think are set up as 12 volts only, which includes the engine starter. Am I correct or is the starter circuit 24 volts? -

The starter is 24V so the starting batteries are configured with 2 sets in parallel (12V pair) and then the pair are wired in series to create a 24V bank. The power is drawn from the entire bank for starting and is also wired to one of the 2 12V banks to power turn signals and headlights, etc. (Unless some of those are 24V as well as my old ’88 was).
Some one will have to come along with the house wiring but usually the 24V side is used for the inverters and the rest is 12V to power your interior lighting and other 12V features. Our bank of house batteries (6-4D, formerly 8-4D) is all 12V as are our inverters.

Should I have to replace my eight 4D agm house batteries, could I replace with six 4D and rewire. Or could I replace with six 4d and two car batteries and not rewire at all?

not as simple as it apears.. go to prevostcar.com use last letter in serial number plus last 4 digits. example w6553 is mine That is how it was delivered to marathon.. For example my defroster motors are 24V. Light are 12V some gauges are 24V .In this case don’t reinvent the original=problems..Your ddec is 12 V for example. My experience FWIW

Every Prevost I know of that has OTR air has a 24v DelcoRemy 50DN alternator, either gear driven or belt driven, mainly to power the OTR air conditioner system with its large 24v evaparator & condenser fans, ac clutch, etc.The four 12v chassis batteries are connected in both series (24v) and parallel (12v) and utilizies a Vanner equilizer. WHY? We have 8 house batteries which are due for replacement. I’d like to reduce the number to 6 to cut down on front axle weight. Is there an issue in doing that or will I be opening a can of worms? We run “pole to pole”, don’t dry camp much and run the generator a lot. Thanks, John

I think the main issue is having less amps available to your inverters while not on shore power / gen power. Having said that, my coach originally had 6, and I bet it’s pretty common to see 6. If your bank supplies 24 & 12v, then the two batteries you remove (to keep 24 and 12v) are probably important.

Yes, if the 8 house batteries are connected to each other in parallel (12v). Hooked up in parallel you can have 1 or 8 or any number in-between.
If your house bank (8) is both 12v and 24 volt like the original poster here? then yes again, hook two 12 volt batts up in series = 24v, and hook four, three, two, or one 12v batts up in parallel = 12v.
