  • Royale Coach and Generators

Posted by Marshall on August 19, 2020 at 7:04 pm

I am the recent new owner of a 2006 Royale Coach. I know several other Royal owners who have this exact same annoying issue…….It takes two tries to get your generator running. Doesn’t matter what you do, but the first time you try to start the ginny, it will not start. It will always start on the second try, just not the first.

Now…..What I’ve come to realize is the crank time for the generators (set in the Silverleaf) is too short to start on the first try. It does work for the second try, but listening to the starter when trying to start the ginny, you realize the crank time is a very short blip of the starter.

Having some free time while on an extended trip, a friend (John Browder) also a Royale Coach owner and PC member and I set out to solve this issue. His coach is also a 2006 Royale Coach with the same 2-start problem.

I have spoken to Silverleaf about this issue, thinking they could extend the crank time in their firmware, but they swear their crank time is set to 18 seconds…..Impossible. I wonder if they are actually set to 18 milliseconds, which would make sense.

Anyway, with John’s help. we integrated a latching relay circuit in between the Silverleaf controls and the Generator, allowing to set whatever crank time I want. The factory crank time is 1/2 second or less…..I added 2 seconds to the latching relay for a total of 2.5 seconds crank time……..voila! Works perfectly! Starts first time!

I still plan on engaging Silverleaf for a factory solution, but I’m happy with the results so far.

Thought I would share in case there are any other Royale Coach owners out there who are fighting the same issue. Send me a note if you want details.

I would certainly press Martin or Dale on the issue. Could be a corrupt line in the software code.

I worked with them for a year and a half on an erroneous fuel gauge.

Finally went to their shop in Oregon and sure nuff was a bad line of code in the interface box that translated the DDEC info.

Please provide model # and source of the relay? I would like to be able tto set ccrank time externally as well

    Roy,

This is the latching relay board I used. I also spent quite a bit of time on the phone with Silverleaf today, and found out my system is configured incorrectly. Correction will require sending my TM102 back to Silverleaf for reconfiguration. But if I do that, I’m at the mercy of their programming. With the latching relay approach, I have full control.

    Marshall,

I have the same generator starting problem. I bought the latching relay board. I’m sure my coach is wired very close to yours. How do I wire it? Actually, I headed to Jeff’s soon. I’ll probably ask him to do it. Thanks for your help.

Have Jeff call me. He has my number. I just left there this morning! Another option for you is to send your TM102 (Silverleaf module back in your plumbing bay) to Silverleaf for reprogramming. I finally got to someone there who knows about this issue. Basically, there are two methodologies for remote generator starting.

1). Send a signal to the generator to “start” for the duration you want the ginny to crank. (This is the older way of doing things – our generators are this type)

2). Send a quick pulse (just a quick voltage on then off) signal to the generator, and it will do the rest.

For whatever reason, our TM102’s (and John Browders is the same as ours) are set to the quick pulse-method #2, and need to be reset to method #1. Unfortunately, they need to go back to Silverleaf to do this.

I just got my coach back from Jeff and am back in Nashville. I plan to send off my TM102 module on Monday or Tuesday for reprogramming. You might want to see how that goes before going through all the trouble of the latching relay.

I am checking on this and think I can make the change to that line of code…

Very Cool. I know you will have three customer jumping at the chance.
