Anyone seen the latest Prevost email ad on the Electric 8 fan set up on radiator? Upgrade to electric set up for a measly $8300 to $10,300. Sounds like a deal to me. Wonder if they would keep up with a Hot Natured 2 Stroke.

While there may be some benefits the problem I have with switching is I cannot come up with an answer to my question of what do I get for my money?

Obviously we get some bragging rights. Not every owner will have electric fans so a coach with them will stand out from the crowd.

We supposedly will get some HP gain, maybe some fuel savings, but if we lose reliability due to the complexity is there a real benefit?

I saw this recently as well and wondered why Prevost did not have an electric fan setup in place years ago.

I am sure this could be done for way less money as a DIY project. I sold my bus 4 years ago but may start looking for another and if I was going to be doing a lot of over the road miles I would look at electric fans. I have spent a lot of time overseas and most of the modern coaches I see there all run electric fans.

Getting rid of the gear box and fan would save mpg and power, also do not need to replace the expensive fan clutch when it fails.

I looked into it a few months ago. Can not be used on a dash air coach because of not enough air flow to both cool engine and the condenser. On the new coaches they have relocated the dash air condenser to the 4th curbside bay on an H and I am not sure which on the X3.

They claim 11 more HP available to the wheels with the new system, and supposedly better fuel mileage too. I was told that some entertainer drivers were boasting 2 mpg better.

I have seen the new setup and I like how it looks. If it did get 2 mpg better, it would pay for itself. Too bad there is no way to use it on a non bus air coach at this time.

buses have done well with under 300 hp for over 60 yrs. We have 500plus now. So if we loose 50 hp for fan that runs on a demand thermostat so what? If you say 2 mpg gain that’s 25% more than is real.. The elusive 10mpg has been a dream for many. I have recently averaged 8mpg figured real average at 6 over time. K has approached 10 but cost vs fuel savings just isn’t there.. Please tell me you guys with the def engines are doing better that 10mpg..Truth not what you heard…!! I’m runnning a pre egr 60 series with eaton autoshift (10 spd) 307 rear axle ratio.. for 8 grand I can buy 2600 gal of fuel. glens we have been corresponding for years so don’t want to step on toes. I just want someone to say their EGR coach gets over 10mpg and they really believe 12 plus is doable .The old 4104 etc got better mpg-they were lighter but well under 300hp.

Yeah Bob seen this in my email box from Prevost and they are a pushing it. Be interesting to see it in action on a 60 series. Would have to have Huey Blades to cool the 2 stroke 8V’s.

Price quoted PLUS labor? Also, the email reads that the system is for engines up to 435hp only

If those fans increase mileage by 2 MPG I will stop complaining about Tom taking my dues money.

First, that’s a 33% fuel savings. Assuming a coach is run 60,000 miles annually the change to electric fans pays for itself in a year. Much shorter if it runs 80,000 to 100,000 miles. Prevost will not be able to keep up with the coaches lined up for the change.

I sent an email to Nick at Prevost asking if they had changed anything yet to allow my coach to utilize the electric cooling package. He said he would get back to me after he checked today to see if anything has changed or being looked at. He said it was not available so far because the VIP coaches are 500 hp and seated are 435.

I was told by Kevin Laughlin that it was the dashboard a/c condenser needing to be relocated that was the issue. Since the new VIP coaches are being built with the new cooling, I assume that Kevin is right, since they have relocated the condenser on these new coaches.

BTW, if I recall correctly, it takes someplace between 20 and 30 hours of labor to do the upgrade.

In FEB of 18 I put a post up with the electric fan drive specs. At that time there was no retro for any coaches. Now I’ve seen them doing it to seated 435hp coaches.

I won’t argue with Kevin but last year it was due to wiring, I don’t think a cooling condenser would stop the retro. I may be wrong.

The H’s and X’s with the electric drive fans all have the dash air condenser moved to curbside rear. Also the D13 belt drive is a Es3 platform and the Electric fan drive is a Es 5 platform, totally different.

I think you need to get the whole package to get that kind of 2 mpg increase, just a change in fans won’t do it in my opinion.

I due get 2 mpg more with mine than I got with my DDECV.

I’m somewhat skeptical of a 2mpg increase in fuel economy. If that was really the case, Prevost should have done this 20 years ago.

Not passing the smell test in Wisconsin.

I wouldn’t say Wisconsin smells, but I’m with Dick. I’ll wait for a verdict but I don’t think I get an extra 2 mpg when not running OTR A/C and I would imagine power drains comparable.

If I put in electric fans, if I disable the emissions systems, if I reduce my 62 MPH down to 55 MPH, my fuel mileage will increase to 34.5 MPG.

If Prevost can lie about a 2 MPG increase, I can lie also.

I missed that Prevost email before it was deleted. Can someone post the link to the page about the electric fan upgrade? I enjoyed reading about the new set up in the new buses and I would love to read about the upgrade.

I don’t think Prevost has ever said that it will give a 2 mpg increase, what I heard was that “some” entertainer drivers were saying that they saw a 2 mpg increase.

Just to be clear, Kevin did not say it was fact, just that some drivers were saying it. I am sure that it does do better than the old fan setup, but I also have some doubts about a 2 mpg increase.

I would think the electric fans would be far more reliable than the old clutches are. Look at how many are on the road in other vehicles. You don’t hear about issues with them.
