  • Dish TV in bus and home

Posted by Roy on April 24, 2020 at 7:11 pm

I have Dish TV service in our bus; Winegard Playmaker 2 and Wally receivers. Works well, easy to activate and deactivate to fit our travel schedule. Easy to get local channels as we travel and the Wally receivers work well.

SO – I want to cut out cable and install Dish TV at home. I need advice/direction from others who have Dish TV in your bus and home under a single account so that the bus receivers are just the $7ea monthly charge on the account – just like a 2nd or 3rd TV receiver at home. Of course my bus receivers will be operating off a different satellite dish than the home ones.

How did you set up the billing? Can you still use the Dish app to change your local channels on the road? What “issues” do I need to be aware of?

    Thanks

Haven’t had any issues and Have Dish at Home with 4 receivers (Wally and Joey’s) and one in coach and have had set up for years. Leave it (Bus) hot all the time and it’s 7 bucks a month. Total for all is $119 and have the American Top 200 with local channels.

That’s a good way to do it, I only have Dish in the coach and it’s 940 a month for top 120 and no premiums. I do like the turn on and off feature and local channels, they’re much more RV friendly that Direct.

    Glen,

Thanks for the quick reply Glen. Sounds like this is going to be easy!

We have a Wineguard t4 in motion paired with Dish. It may be different now, but not all dish receivers were compatible (we had to use a dish Vip 211 receiver, $7). We have four receivers in the house; if we wanted to bring in the 211, it could also be connected and used in the house. Local channels are easy to change to your location ($12).

Roy: We’ve kicked this around a while also. We have the same lousy cable at home as you do and Dish Outdoors with local channels on the roof of the rig which we only pay for when we’re on the road half a year. We just added NetFlix at home for $13/mo. and have more stuff to watch now at than we’ll ever need.

Wish we could bring back the good old days when, after dinner, everyone walked around the campground and talked to folks and had a campfire…. ‘social distancing’ days excluded of course.

I have had direct for a good number of years and have been very satisfied. I have been getting my networks on the New York distant feed which works very good. I now get an email from at&t that congress may not renew this and I will no longer get the distant channels. I have never tried getting local channels when I travel so dont know if that works

What have some of you been doing if you have direct? It sounds like dish works good on the road. Some comments please.

We were with Direct forever, but when they stopped providing ABC, and then coincidently we had issues with the receiver and got nowhere getting assistance we were done.

I attribute both the loss of service as well as the difficulty in communicating to ATT so we are Dish customers. My wife loves it. But service for the coach was painful until we found out the antenna and “Wally” people are at each other’s throats. When I found I could access all the antenna settings via the antenna wi-fi, and I could go into the Dish settings via the remote to do anaysis I no longer need them so life is good.

Here is the actual e-mail from DTV.

Regrettably, we must inform you of a new law that affects your programming. Until recently, the Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act Reauthorization (STELAR) Act authorized DIRECTV to provide you access to your out-of-market broadcast networks—ABC, CBS, NBC, CW, and/or FOX. Unfortunately, Congress has decided to not renew key provisions of this law. As a result, on June 1, 2020, we no longer will be able to provide you access to these out-of-market channels. These are not available anywhere else. However, this change does not affect access to your existing local network stations.

If you’re paying for these channels, you’ll receive a credit within 1-2 billing cycles for this programming change.

If you have any questions, please call us at 866.595.9429.

    Thank you for choosing DIRECTV.

I am not having a lot of luck getting a direct answer but the STELAR Act specifically gave RVers and Trucker the permanent right to receive the DNS signals. It sounds like AT&T does not want to be bothered.

I have been in contact with few folks in the know and no one knows what’s going on at this point. I could just change my service address to NY and get those channels everywhere in the US but there’s a possibility they would turn the NY spot beam on and we could lose both NY and LA Nationwide as there would no longer be a need.

Worst case, we will switch the Trav’ler hardware over to DISH (about $300) and install a Hopper and Joey and leave 20 years with DTV behind us. I am not a fan of that idea as I like having all 3 satellites so close together and not having to worry about EA or WA but sometimes you have to take the lesser of 2 evils.

I am trying to understand how the dish in your bus works. If you have one account for home and bus or a special account for the bus which is better, and how do you get the local channels when you travel from place to place? Also will the receivers on top of my RV work with Dish or will they need changing, I have an in motion and a HD sat.

    Looking for answers.

There’s no doubt in my mind at AT&T regrets its purchase of DirecTV. It appears they are hoping to phase it out in the very near future.

I’m at a loss here as to why all you guys are trying for local channels over your satellite be it Dish or Direct.

The satellites you connect to don’t know where you are and don’t tell them.

You can run 1 account from your household and add receivers to it, put them in the bus and you will be able to watch your household programming wherever you go.

If you want local get your on air antenna working and you will have local channels wherever you are. A Razor is a good choice.

The day you tell them you are mobile and want to change programming for a certain area you will be lost in the fog.

I know there’s alot of people out there who think their the smartest guy in the room. This is a proven alternative and has worked for me and countless others for many years.

You can’t beat free HD programming from your on air antenna.

    Follow-up/conclusion to our original question/situation:

We duplicated Glen’s configuration and had the DISH service installed at home yesterday. It was established as a new account in order to get maximum deals and discounts (currently offering a $300 gift card). The in-home new Hopper 3 receiver has a large feature list and we’ll be busy a couple of days learning!

After a week or so, we will add the Wally receiver in the bus onto our home account and leave it activated for $7 monthly (just like Glen).

Thanks for the answers and info

Roy, A wally connected to your antenna is marketed by Dish, but it is a separate company from Dish, and they hate the antenna manufacturers. That is my experience.

If you travel and I don’t move around often and only in Texas when I head to Gulf Coast, West Texas or anywhere I want to get local programing just call um up and change to the closest tv stations that they offer. Change it when you need it. Might be able to do it online. Have had the Dish network since I’ve owned the coach. 10 years.

While no one knows where you are, your receiver can tell where you are not! All Network programming (ABC, NBC, etc.) is broadcast in what’s known as a spot beam. If you are from FL, your Networks can only be received when you are within several hundred miles of FL. Once you are in VA or AL or CA, you receiver will not be able to receive ANY Network programmiing. DISH makes changing the receivers location pretty easy if you have a separate “Outdoors” account but not so easy if you take your home receiver in your RV. It’s still possible, it’s just not as easy.

Doing this with DTV is a real PITA so the DNS service allows you to watch all of the Networks without issue.
