Racor 1000 FH
Hi PC,
My Racor filter housing is seeping fuel out around the bottom edge of the sight bowl. I believe this Racor filter/separator is the original one installed on my bus. I purchased a new housing unit from Parker and was wondering if anyone has changed one of these units out before and what to expect? The plumbing seems straightforward enough but will I have to re-prime the engine after installing the new one? And is there a standard way to prime the fuel lines/engine if needed? How much fuel will be released after disconnecting the fuel lines?

Fred, if the fuel lines are rubber, they can be pinched with hose pinch pliers preventing the lose of fuel. I do this all the time on the Webasto burner fuel lines.

Hi Rudy, I was thinking about doing that but the lines are braided so I don’t want to pinch them off. I was thinking about capping the lines off after I detach them if I knew what size they were before taking them off their fittings but I don’t know that so I’d have to have different sizes on hand if I tried that. I have a big pan to catch any fuel so really my only worry about this project is re-starting the engine. I’ve never had to prime an engine before.

By far most of the fuel is below the Racor fittings, especially if the coach is low on fuel. I would be hesitant to squeeze the lines shut, but to give you a clue about what to expect, open the drain valve on the bottom of the Racor bowl and empty it. If it does not refill with fuel you have no concerns.

Hi Jon, I tried to empty the canister by dipping a container down the side and scooping it out but after getting about a gallon of fuel out that way it refilled quickly. I’m hesitant to pinch the lines too because wouldn’t braided lines just stay crimped afterward? Is there a way to crimp a braided line without damaging it? Because if I could do that, that would be the easiest way to get around this problem.

I’m looking at the fitting that connects to the 90-degree elbow out of the side of the housing. It has a yellow nut in between the two nuts I’d need to loosen to take the line off. Is it possible that this may be a shut-off fitting? I’ve never seen this type of connection before.

No that is not a shutoff ,part of the hose from below, that fitting is a JIC hydraulic fitting, called a reusable, bottom nut as you call it is on outside of hose ,your yellow nut is a male that goes into bottom nut expanding keeping hose in place. Hydraulic shop will have plugs to go into hose looks like a number 6 or 8 jic .

Fred to loosen hold 90 degree fitting and loosen nut that is threaded to the 90 ,the nut on top will swivel ,the fitting below 90 is all one piece.

Thank you for the info Paul it is very helpful to me. Just wishful thinking on my part. I wonder why they don’t plumb in shut-off valves into these lines? It would sure make it a lot easier come repair time.

Fred, there may not be shut off valves in the lines to the Racor, but look in the vicinity of the standard primary and secondary fuel filters for shut off valves.

Ok all done, it took me about 3 hrs. I did in fact find two shut-off valves, one in-line and one at the screw-on fuel filter housing like Jon said. I got a 1/2 inch galvanized nipple and a cap and used that to stop up the fuel lines after I took them off and that worked well. I got it all back together and she started right up the first time with no hesitation and no leaks! It’s always fun to get this kind of repair done for me. I fell asleep last night thinking about galvanized nipples and so that confirms it…I really am weird!

I am going to change my fuel lines while I am here, Does anyone have a brand preference for the Fabric hose? I plan on reusing the fittings.
