  • Auto-fill solenoid

Posted by michael on October 31, 2013 at 9:23 am

On our first trip out with the coach, while in a RV park connected to their water, I deceided to use the auto fill since our tank was running low. I pressed the switch on the dash and it activated the fill solenoid. I didn’t want to fill the tank so after about five minutes I pressed the dash switch to turn it off. Nothing happened, tank still filling. I pressed the switch in the “water bay” and still nothing happened. To stop the water,I disconnected the power wire at the solenoid. I suspect the relay is stuck/bad. After two hours of searching, I located the relay ( I think) behind a panel next to the hot water tanks and adjacent to the refrig water filter. Had to order a relay since local parts stores didn’t have one available. Now I am wondering if I could have a bad switch? If one switch was bad, would the second switch deactivate the relay? Just thinking ahead if the relay doesn’t fix it. The dash switch stays lighted all the time now. Any thoughts?

    Michael,

You haven’t identified your year or converter, that would help with questions. Sounds to me as though the relay is bad.

It helps greatly if when posting a question if either the post or signature line includes a description of the coach, converter, or the devices in question.

I’m not picking on Michael, but pointing out that with the considerable number of members on this site now, it is probably somebody has knowledge of the specific system or has had the same problem and can offer advice. The description has to be quite specific because some converters have used slightly different system designs to accomplish something and it may be a model year that makes the difference, or a 12 volt versus a 24 volt coach, or some other reason to require specificity.

This solenoid open and closes the fresh water fill. I was able to unscrew the notch piece from the housing without taking the valve out of the bus. Found a very small piece of teflon tape had lodged itself in the seated valve.

The click you hear pushing on the rocker switch is this valve. There is a small spring inside so keep the housing against the threads until clearing.

Contacting Marathon tech support expert, Leon suggested looking at this valve for obstruction. Marathon has used this valve for many years with very low failure of valve. Most often dirt in narrow passage.
