  • Aux Fuel Tank?

Posted by Art on March 28, 2025 at 9:48 am

My 40 ft XL bus has the 100 gallon Auxiliary fuel tank in the rear side of the front bay, I know that tank has a 1 1/2 ID hose that connects the main tank and Aux tank at the lowest part of both tanks, reason I know this is the 1st 6 months we owned the bus it had a very slow drip in bypass hose that is at rear of 2nd bay that connects both tanks together. I drained the fuel from tanks at that time it had close to 200 gallons in them,I pumped it all in clean blue barrels and replaced hose with new 1 1/2 fuel line then pumped fuel back in. I’m thinking of adding a bypass shut off on that 1 1/2 fuel line and draining Aux tank into barrels then using fuel till blue barrels are empty. Reason is I don’t want to remove Aux tank for bus resale reasons and now days most of our trips are 500 to 600 mile trips so really don’t need that much fuel, Never pulled carpeted cover off Aux tank,Is it Steel? does it have any access covers? Does it have a Vent? In the winter I always keep fuel tanks full for condensation reasons so with only main fuel it will be lighter and less fuel to store. Any thoughts on that?? Is the main tank 150 gallons and Aux tank 100 total 250 gallons?

    Art,

Not trying to be a smartazz. What does the service manual tell you with regard to tank construction and access panels? I found the Prevost service manual for my serial number coach to have an incredible amount of information.

I have heard of coaches your era with 250 gal tanks. I believe Colorado bus may have had one.

The main tank should be 165 gallon. That’s what I have as I have no aux tank. I miss the extra fuel as I make lots of long trips. My ’88 has a 205 gallon capacity which gave me more flexibility as to where and when to stop, but I have adapted!

Looking at Jerry’s fuel schematics mine is a lot like that but my AUX tank is in the 1st front bay up against back wall opposing bay #2 It has plywood and carpet covering it but with a flash light I can see a small hose coming off the top of tank and heading probably to main tank it looks like a vent for AUX tank. Do you think Prevost or Royale(Monaco) Added Aux tank, Reason I’m asking is at the bottom of Main tank there is a 1 1/2 fitting to supply Aux tank with fuel.

I’m Going to look in my Prevost parts Book. Yesterday I was looking at the fuel plumbing, In the rear compartment passenger side is where Aqua Hot water pump and Aux compressor, I can see looking forward into top of the main fuel tank in next compartment forward there are 2 large blue braided fuel lines for the Detroit, Aqua Hot has a black rubber supply line and another black rubber return fuel line with a Tee, so something else returns with Aqua Hot with red tape on it,It has to be generator return and then there is 1 more rubber black fuel line either generator supply line or it goes to Aux tank? On top of Aux tank there is a black rubber line just like Jerry’s schematics ???

Texas 40 is correct. Our previous bus, 2000 Marathon XL40 had the larger single tank of 250 gallons. Two busses ago our 1992 Beaver XL #34 had 250 gallon capacity but it was 2 tanks tied together. The standard 160 gallon with added aux tank of 90 with tie in hose at bottom of both. Wish prevost would put in larger tanks at factory now. Our current 45 ft Featherlite Vogue has standard 208. Its too small
