  • Radiator Work

Posted by Chas on May 21, 2016 at 2:42 pm

So as I mentioned, I had to have some work done on my radiator due to a small leak. After getting the radiator pulled and bringing it to a shop, it was determined the radiator was actually in very good condition. Core was fine, side cans were fine. Pulled everything apart and cleaned the core (no corrosion) as well as cleaned the end cans, pressure tested each part individually, then built it back up with new seals on the end cans, new bolts/nuts and a new coat of paint. Almost looks new. This took the local shop 2 days to complete.

    Refinished Radiator:

The real bad part was the base plate/mount. Was rusted beyond me wanting it back on the coach. Jeff pointed me to a local metal shop who made a replacement for me based on the original plate. Not perfect, but will do the job. The plasma cutting to get the cutouts were done by hand so they are not straight, but it was done the same day and cost the same price that Prevost wanted for a new one that they couldnt get to me for over a month.

Primed it, painted it with engine paint and should do me good for a while.

    Old plate:

New one (have all new rubber pads/washers/nuts/bolts to go on):

Thanks, I guess… I mean I drove to the shops, told them what I wanted and gave them cash. Jeff’s guys pulled the CAC/Radiator so I could get it rebuilt, so not sure I deserve anything more then a “good for you for not getting a speeding ticket” 🙂

Of course if Prevost actually supplied the parts, I would be about $3500 shorter in the wallet and not sure how much further ahead I would be in terms of longevity. My primary driver was I couldnt wait around till sometime after this coming up week (they better not screw me on the fan clutch!)

But in the end, the sunset is just wonderful from East Tennessee Luxury Coach this evening 🙂

And if all goes well, tomorrow I should get a motorcycle ride in.

Nice work Jeff.. Thought you did it yourself Charles, but hey, take the credit, Jon does it all the time.

I get tired just thinking about working on the bus.

Yesterday i arm wrestled a replacement aux compressor into place from under the coach and could not believe how what was supposed to be a direct replacement ended up being a huge PITA.

I don’t even want to think about a radiator replacement after struggling with mine when I changed the CAC.

    Ted,

Thanks Ted. Spent many days up there and enjoyed many of the roads around it. That is the second reason we spend time up in Vonore 🙂
