  • Generator overspeed shutdown.

Posted by Larry on April 7, 2015 at 12:49 am

Powertech 17.5 kw gen set with Izusu engine. Unit has been working great. Unit ran all night Thursday night, shut it off Friday morning, restarted at about noon, ran for about 5 minutes, no load other than charging and shutdown with an overspeed fault. Reset fault, same thing again. Trying different things, found if I loaded generator with the air or heat pumps on it would continue to run but when I turned all load off, it went into overspeed fault again.

I backed the governor limit screw back one turn to slow the unit down, still went into overspeed shutdown, before it did, the inverter showed an error light indicating out of frequency range. So slowing the unit down did not correct anything, by listening to rpm, it does not seem to speed up any, so I am asking for opinions, what is likelyhood of overspeed sensor being bad? I haven’t looked for a sensor yet, thinking I will pull wire off and see what it does, I’m assuming sensor will probably short to ground to kill the engine.

The owners manual leaves a lot to be desired, not much help.

Larry, I would call Jeff Jones at Powertech. 352-435-4416. He can point you in the right direction.

Jerry, I can’t say much for your man at Powertech, lol. I called twice and left a message and number and no call back. This is not the first time this has happened, about 4 months ago I called a few times over 4-5 days about a different issue, never got a person to talk to, never got a call back. Their customer service has gone the way of many businesses. Besides their owners manual lacking a lot, their customer service is also poor.

Peter, many years back I attented quite a few generator schools, sold, start-up, troubleshooting on large (100-300kw) generator sets, never did anything with small units, but operation on all sizes are the same. My past experience tells me the problem I have is either a speed sensor or a problem in the control panel. I lean toward the speed sensor, I cannot find anything on the engine that might be a sensor, so I do not know how Powertech designs their set to sense overspeed. That is the info I need and I can go from there.

Larry, Give Tradewinds, Donnie Meyers or even Vantare a call. Since they were installing the gensets they might be able to help you.

Vantare was completely lost. Seems like no one has been there long enough to remember how coaches were built “back then”. Records seem to have been lost over the years on the builds. My serial number nor the build sheet number that the coach was built by didn’t mean anything to them. Typical,,,LOL.

I always wonder why there is such little input from Vantare when folks need help. You can get help anytime at Liberty, Marathon, Millennium and Parliament, but no such asstance from Vantare. It would be nice if Donnie Myers would get on here to help folks out, we do our best to point people in his direction. He is the go to guy for Vantare for sure.

Amadas Coach bought all the records for Vantare years ago and they had all the build sheets wiring diagrams on our 98 Vantare and were very helpful… they sent me all the records on our coach free of charge… emailed them all as pdf. files… Try calling them… they were so helpful.

The girl I dealt with was Shannon Adams Woodward, 757-925-2862. I believe it is a separate division of Featherlite.
