  • Window Shade in Marathon

Posted by Tim on September 8, 2016 at 9:40 am

I have a shade that does not roll up. The motor works, but it seems there must be a broken spoke or latch that doesn’t allow the shade to go up or down.

Has anyone replaced one of these since I don’t see any screws for removing this shade.

    Hi Tim,

If yours are semilar to ours (XLII) there are brackets on the back side of the shade at the top of the frame.that hold the shade/frame in place. Use your flashlight and look up high behind the shade and the window. There should be at least two brackets. Pull down, but not to hard, and flex the shade out at the top and it should come out. Just be careful because the power wire is behind there and it is rather small. You may have a broken string that is not allowing the motor to rewind the shade back up. Keep us informed.

    Tim,

Since our H’s are only a couple years apart, we probably have the same Hunter Douglass Silouette shades and they don’t have strings to operate, they just roll up and down with the motor. The valance can easily be removed with a few screws so you can get to the blind. There will be 2 tabs that are used to release the blind, I use a piece of plastic, but you can use a credit card. Look at this video: Silouette Removal

The motor is a Somfy and the gear on the end is probably broken or stripped. The motor looks like this:

    Hope that helps..

    Thanks Guys,

It is a Hunter Douglas. I removed the shade and, since the motor is working, but the gear is broke, I sent it to Leon to fix it. Still cheaper than driving there or buying a new one.

Nice to to know you can send a part into Marathon to fix it.

Dan, I saw your post after I sent it to Marathon to fix.

Does anyone have a source for the LT 28-H1 motor drive wheel?

Exactly same issue as Tim had, motor runs but does not engage the shade to open or close. Is there a possibility that the drive wheel can disengage from the motor? How much motor / wheel engagement is there? Everything worked fine when I closed them…indication that something was wrong was when I heard the motor still running after all blinds were closed, no other noise that will indicate that something broke.

I did not take down the shade yet due to valances being in the way, would like to have the parts before I start removing stuff…

    Thanks

Can anyone provide an @estimate for how much it might cost to change the solid Hunter Douglas shades out to the Hunter Douglas Silhouette shades for a non-slide XLII? Really like the idea of being able to see outside during the day – while maintaining privacy.

Do the Silhouette shades require a different motor?

    Thank you,

I had years ago checked with a local dealer about changing the shades in my 99 CC.

    The prices were abnormally expensive.

If I remember they were several hundred dollars each and that was just the price of the shades.

    Thanks, Buddy!

Sounds like our daytime option may be to just open the existing Hunter Douglas shades on the side of the coach we want to see out…(away from direct sunlight during hot days/months). And, close them at night. 🙂

Unless, just maybe, tonight’s Lottery ticket comes through! Deb’s been guaranteeing a winner for 32+ years…and, I believed her. Starting to have my doubts…but, why not us! Lightening might strike.

    Thank you,

    Dorel,

The valances on my Marathon H were easy to remove, 2 or 3 screws on the bottom and then just pulling loose the Velcro.

Thank you Ed…so that entire section is one long piece hold in place by Velcro? Then, under that must be the wood piece I see thru the small opening…I will take pics when I remove, so we can share with others.

Can you point in your picture the drill/screw location to hold the drive wheel connected to the motor?

How long ago, you contacted Marathon about the “hidden” stock, have you talk to Faye or someone else? I know the parts manager is no longer there…

    Thank you!

One of the yachts I was running had over two dozen of the older somfy blind motors with the end pieces stripped out. Changing to the newer style was not only expensive, but a bit of re-engineering had to be done. So found someone with a digital printer and gave them the one good end piece I had. They printed me a lot of the end pieces and problem solved.

Lot cheaper than replacing and re-engineering. Do not have the contact info for the guy that did it anymore, that was about 8 years ago so technology has advanced and your results should be even better.

Greg, look at americanblinds.com or blinds.com and see what their Hunter Douglas shades are selling for.

Have used American Blinds on two houses with great success.
