  • Which TV antenna ?

Posted by Marius on July 18, 2015 at 12:00 am

    Hello all,

    Looking for some advice.

I am getting ready for a trip and would like to get some TV channels while parked…the more the better.

The coach used to have an older Concord TV antenna that was electric lift and rotate but only the base and motor are left on the roof…..arms and batwing are gone. The controls inside are in the cabinet and connected.

Now…..I can get a surplus, new Concord antenna and restore the previous system. Or….get a newer generation antenna like an Onmidirectional ( Rayzer RX-8500 from Winegard) for example. or many other….

The info I have, however, is that all these Omni antennas, regardless of maker do not work well because we have a metal roof and the antenna is too close to the roof, thus getting a lot of interference…..

Does anybody have any experience with these stationary, Omnidirectional units ?

What did you put on the roof of your coach that works well to upgrade into the HD era ?

    Thanks

Liberty Coach in Stuart, FL replaced the original antenna on our 2000 XLV with a new, stationary omni-directional one. It was installed in the same spot as the old one.

The new antenna out performed the old bat-wing one and did an excellent job of receiving digital, high definition over-the-air broadcasts.

Since you raised this topic, are the majority simply using an HDTV antenna or using Direct TV Sat via Winegard or other system? I would imagine many camp sites would have a hard time pulling in an HDTV signal, but don’t know….

Simply stated the use of cable TV or over the air TV is a pain, especially for a one night stay because the TVs have to program themselves to receive the available cable or over the air channels.

So since I don’t embrace technology as others might, I just use Direct TV or watch DVDs. My only effort to watch Direct TV is I have to use my computer to have Direct TV to reauthorize my receiver, which is OK because we use it as out music via the TV when going down the road so the few minutes spent doing that pays dividend during our entire trip.

    Marius,

I’ve been thinking about something like this Winegard.

So does my computer do it in a few minutes. The only difference is I can actually read my computer without fondling the screen.

We actually have three TVs. I listened to Direct TV XM music on the bay TV a couple of years ago in Branson. First and only time. We don’t watch the TV in the bedroom, but when my grandson was little he used the bedroom TV to watch Barney VCR tapes. Now the one in the bedroom that we don’t watch will play DVD, cable or over the air, but it doesn’t matter. We don’t watch it.

We do watch the 3rd TV that is in the living room. I have a collection of Lennon Sisters VCRs that I am still trying to figure out how to play, but in the meantime we watch Ed Sullivan on DVDs. We especially like Kate Smith and Julius LaRosa.

Some of the wise guys on here don’t even know who Kate Smith or Julius LaRosa were.

But that’s OK. I don’t know who Beeber is.

    Jon,

Wasn’t LaRosa a regular on the Authur Godfry show and not the Ed Sullivan Really Big Shoe?

P.S. I am 71. Middle age for me, as I plan to live to the age of 140 and be killed by a jealous husband.

We replaced the Concord with a Winegard Roadstar. I was always concerned about the Concord retracting & storing properly, as that’s the one thing the PO mentioned when we bought the coach. If you make the change, make sure you put the provided amplifier in the loop before your “button box” in the AV cabinet. It will not work well without it. 😉 We have generally better reception – more stations & less signal loss – now than with the Concord, but of course the number of channels & signal strength does depend on your location. We selected the Roadstar because the base seemed larger and was metal as opposed to breakable plastic (on the Jack).
