I understand what an equalizer does and how it does it, but I still cannot get past the fact a 12 volt house system doesn’t need an equalizer.

Separate alternators. Now that I have it figured out things are much better. Just waiting for a new voltage regulator.

Doesnt an equaliser allow for charging a 12v battery bank with a 24v alternator?

Yes, in this bus it’s only for chassis batteries. I was confused in the beginning but am starting to get a handle on it now

On my Featherlite, the second Vanner Equalizer is connected to the 24vdc bus of the coach batteries and provides 12vdc to lights etc inside. Inverters are connected to the 24vdc electrical bus as well

Yes. but obviously you need a battery charger or inverters maintaining the charge on the 24V side of things.

Here’s a pic of the (2) vanners for 12 volt house system beside Voltage Regulator and if you look down there’s (2) above chassis batteries.

The question I have to ask is what function do the 2 equalizers for the house perform if the house is 12V?

Or maybe a better question is are the house batteries set up as 24V and all house 12V circuits come off the equalizers. The only way to me that makes sense is if the house batteries are charged by the same alternator as the chassis.

This is a perfect example of how much trouble we all get in when we assume one coach is like the others.

That is the way mine is 24v with a 60 watt Vanner

So this discussion doesn’t get real confusing, can we call the devices a name that defines their function, such as equalizer, monitor, converter, or inverter. Every one of those devices was made at one time by Vanner.

As to a 60 amp equalizer (on the house I assume) it makes me suspect the same thing I posted above about Glen’s coach. Someone needs to verify that because I suspect right now a lot of people following this thread are getting confused.

Yep. Confused. I was under the impression that all or most chassis battery banks were 24v and the equalizer steps it down for 12v chassis stuff and if you have 12v house allows charging of that bank as well. ( probably with 2 equalizers) I do not understand it very well but your Point about there being multiple ways that converters can set them up clarifies that as owners we really only need to figure out how ours is set up. Is there any time dedicated to equalizers in the seminars other than just basics of the devices purpose??

Jeff, Folks that go to the seminars guide the seminars with respect to how much we concentrate our discussions on a given topic.

To use electrical systems as an example we can discuss coaches with one, two or even more alternators, we can talk about the chassis 24/12 volt system and house systems of 12 or 24 volts. To go further we can cover coaches with inverters that handle 100% of the house, or coaches whose inverters only cover a limited number of circuits.

Our coaches are an evolving product and through the years they have changed, but through the years converters have accomplished a lot of the same things in different ways so we try to help owners who are interested to develop an understanding of how their coach is set up.

Interesting. I really need to get to one. Thanks.

On my 97 Royale the 50 DN is 12volt it’s for house only, inverters 12v there is a 12v external regulator for the 50DN, 24volt side it has the Delco 24v alternator with a internal regulator ant it uses the Vanner 12/24 volt equalizer because the 12v chassis batteries are wired in series for 24v they tap into them in 2 spots 12v and 24v, Vanner equalizer keeps the 2 voltages correct. The 24volt side is only for chassis nothing to do with house totally separate. I installed a VictronEnergy monitor on 12v house side,I installed it when I 1st got the bus so I can look at gauge or look at my I phone to see how my 12v system is doing (House)

OPPS got a little out of control on the size. Pretty cool monitor it tells all kinds of info on house side.

I re named this post to help eliminate some of the confusion.

The update is after literally around 100 phone calls I located a new regulator and had it shipped to the resort. After installed all better. Or is it? I drove 850 miles home life was good. We unloaded the coach and shut everything down. I plugged in to my garage 110 volt.

Get up the next morning go to work, come home from work and I can smell batteries again.

I checked the voltage and I’m at 13.5

I try to shut inverter s off they wont turn off. So I unplugged the shore power and they finally shut off.

I’m at a loss as to which direction to go next. Luckily it will be another 400 day so I will have time to ponder it
