  • Vanner 60-60 Battery Equalizer – Replacement?

Posted by Ronald on May 31, 2018 at 8:40 am

I have two Vanner 60-60 Battery Equalizer. Looking at the Vanner web site yesterday and a note in the manual states the 60-60 model is obsolete. Any suggestion/recommendation on what replacement is available?

Thanks, Jeff. I have two wired in parallel. Should I replace with two 100 amp units, and do you recommend Vanner as a replacement? I will make a call to the company you mentioned once I find their contact information.

Ron do you have a Vanner Monitor too? If so, do you know how old the Vanner Monitor is? I had what we believe to be the original Vanner Monitor from 1999 catch fire and melt down a few years ago. What a mess. Luckily some melted wiring and melted air lines was the only additional damage. While you’re replacing the Vanner Equalizer, consider replacing the Vanner Monitor too if its older.

I do not believe the vintage coach Ron has will have a monitor.

This one does not have a Vanner monitor. When I was reviewing the Vanner models it was the first mention I saw a monitor. Can one be added?

Ron, I believe your coach will provide the same alerts the monitor will, just using different methods.

In simple terms all the monitor does is tell you via a dashboard warning light of and over or under chassis voltage or if you have an imbalance relative to the 12 and 24 volt circuits.

I was reading the post about battery Equalizer and here are some picts of Battery EQ-Monitor-Voltage regulator?? What do these components all do, EQ charges the 4 starter batteries 12 & 24 v from Detroit? Monitor controls dash light (yellow) when started? 3rd not sure?? #1 Vanner Model 60-100 EQ #2 Vanner Model EM70D monitor #3 TRANSPO Model D443 Regulator ?

Each device has a primary function. The voltage regulator is an external type that controls the voltage level of the 50DN alternator output. Its setting according to the Prevost service manual is 27.7 volts.

The equalizer (a 100 amp single equalizer or a pair of 60 amp) maintains the voltage relationship between the 24 volt circuits and the 12 volt circuits of the chassis batteries. The alternator charges the 24 volt side of the chassis battery system, and the equalizer insures that the 12 volt side is always within 1/2 volt of half the 24 volt side voltage. When the equalizer fails it is possible for the 24 volt side to have full voltage but the 12 volt side can drop so low that anything powered from the 12 volt side can fail, such as DDEC.

The monitor is just that. It has inputs from the 12 and 24 volt systems of the Prevost chassis and it will light a dash warning light if the voltage drops below or goes above certain voltages and it will light a light if the 12 volt voltage is not within 1/2 a volt of 50% of the 24 volt value.

As a note, anytime I get a dash warning light from the monitor my first reaction is to verify the input voltages to the monitor to verify they are out of range. If they are not I disable the monitor output until I can replace what is a failed monitor. If they are out of range then my course of action depend on the malfunction.

Here is a add on the last question for Royal guys, The little black box is a Bosch 75amp Relay and it is for the 12v and the TRANSPO Reg 12v is for that large 50DN alternator that is 12v,and the other alternator is the 24v and does it have an internal regulator anyone explain how they work together?? When key is on the Bosch relay connects Pos on TRANSPO 12v to Pos on 50DN alt, Field on TRANSPO is tied to Field on 50DN Alt. What charges field or Pos ?

If it is like most conversions the two alternators do not work together, but are for two separate systems.

If a coach has used the 50DN as a 12 volt alternator then it is being used exclusively for the house circuits and a smaller, lower output 24V alternator is used for the chassis electrical circuits.

Generally speaking if a coach does not have OTR its electrical demands are less so the converter dedicates the 50DN to the greater loads of the 12 volt house.

The 24V alternator usually has an internal voltage regulator. It still requires the use of an equalizer on the chassis battery circuits,

Most converters got away from 12V house systems, especially if an A/C unit was run off an inverter. The reason was capacity because on a 12V system a roof air or Cruisair would typically draw 130 amps which was about 1/2 the 50DN output, and by going to 24V the draw was down to 65 amps.

I should not have assumed in my first response the 50DN was being used for the house or that it was 24V because I knew some converters did as described above.

Yes Jon it does not have the OTR air, and the 50DN just charges the House batts and the pict of the TRANSPO 12v regulator is for 12v system and so is the Bosch relay 12v, those 3 components are for House 12v. And as for the 24v system the 24v alt in the picture must have a internal regulator and the Vanner Model 60-100D Equalizer and the Vanner Model #EM70D Monitor takes care of the Starter bats.
