May I introduce you to the new Mossberg 590 Shockwave. It is not a gun, it is not a shotgun, it is a “firearm”. Small easy for a man or woman to operate and you do not need a special licence to own. It is a new firearm that falls in-between the two categories listed. It is affordable at $350 plus tax and you can get 1/4 load shotgun shells which are terrific for home defense. I have attached a youtube video (there are so many I had to choose one) so you can see it in operation. While I am certainly in agreement with anyone’s choice regarding personal protection I hope everyone realizes the absolute best defense we all have is the ignition key.

I never ever want to be put in a situation where I feel compelled to put a weapon in my hand because that means I have no further options and my only recourse is to use it. On a few occasions we found ourselves in a place where we realized we might not be safe and getting in the driver’s seat and going elsewhere ended the problem,

With our entry door locked nobody is going to be an instant threat unless they have a very fast way to enter through windows that are at least 6 feet off the ground.

That is one of the reasons we practically always camp in a campground. We have never camped in a campground where we did not feel safe. So far we have not had any problems finding a campground that will fit our coach, including here at the AF Academy Famcamp, where we shoehorned the coach in between the gorgeous trees.

No offense but what is wrong with you Americans? This is the only civilzed country in the world where gun ownership seems to be on the same level as believing in god in all is assorted flavors. I would bet that 99% of the people who own firearms have no clue how to use them properly and who would hurt themselves or get killed if they were to use them. A permit to carry means nothing. I am certified but do not carry. The only reason for me getting the permit is that it was a novelty for me and I wanted to find out what is required to get one. Which is nothing but to sit in a classroom for 2 hours and to fire one shot at a target 3 feet away.

I know this is an explosive subject matter and a lot of you will claim amendment rights and all this stuff and tell me to mind my own business.

But imagine, in England, during the past 30 years, less policeman got killed in the line of duty than being killed in this country in a week? Why, because in England, they do not carry firearms and like the rest of Europe, gunownership is strictly controlled.

Me? I am fancying a Stainless Steel Mossberg. But that is just daydreaming …

England has 53 million people compared to the USA’s 323 million.

Our founding is a little different than England the 2nd amendment was in direct response to that difference. Our government has existed in the same form since 1789, the oldest on earth by the way. The Civil War roughed us up a bit, but our system of governance was maintained and restored. One can argue the pros and cons and the effect plus or minus of gun ownership but maybe the greatest word to zone in on is freedom. Does England have the same form and type of freedom? I’ll leave that to you because we’re not in fact talking about England we’re talking about the United States.

Like any law there are those who choose to ignore and abuse them but some how along the way we continue our Constitution and Declaration of Independence. And who do other nations turn to when otheir options seem to run out? Oops, snother conversation isn’t it?

Ronald you are correct despite what Harry says, but while I am totally opposed to the thinking I need protection, there is a reality at work making my opposition to being armed the wrong posture.

Until the late 90’s we had no personal protection on the coach. Until we parked in a rest area to pee and get some coffee we never felt the need. But on that day unlike normal my wife walked the pup while I used the bathroom. When I was done I looked out the window to find a guy invading her personal space and I could see she was very uncomfortable and needed to get away from him.

If he had attempted to harm her my recourse might have been to come charging out of the coach with a butter knife. As it turns out, before we could pull out of the rest area a cop who had gone through before came back and handcuffed this guy just outside out bedroom window. When he was searched the cop pulled a long bladed knife from his pocket. Then a second cop came and restrained the bad guy in the back seat of one of the cop cars, chaining him to the eye ring in the floor. Then they rousted his girl from the car and restrained her and then started searching the car. We left at that time but realized that just by pulling in the rest area to pee we were at risk.

It was not long after that and after many discussions with other Prevost owners that we realized were were one of the very few that were unarmed. That situation has now changed.

This is just like the brake discussion. None of us ever wants to avail ourselves of devices to offer us some safety, but the way things are with drivers and bad guys whether we are willing to admit it or not we need to prepare in some way, no matter how small to try to tip the odds in our favor.

I disagree with you on a few points, Ronald. But let’s focus on your 99% figure. I’ll assume you were exaggerating, because that is simply nuts! Every veteran, country kid, hunter and anyone else who has been schooled in the safe use of a firearm is safer with a firearm on a coach than without. I’ll agree that concealed carry training isn’t extensive (I’ve held a license/permit/endorsement in eight states over the last 23 years), but it should be enough to keep the person from harming themselves or others. If that’s the case, the rest is benefit.

You can’t make the guns disappear from the US, so comparisons to other countries are pretty simplistic. There are plenty of guns in the hands of bad guys. Traveling, almost by definition, will expose us to unknown threats in
unfamiliar places. In the US, I will be armed when I can legally be so.

There are areas in London that are now so dangerous that they have been declared no go zones. Police warn the public about venturing into these areas and the potential for real danger. If you have gotten your CCW then one should know that this is only the beginning. As a responsible CCW permit holder or a firearm owner, it is your responsibility to put the time in at the range becoming proficient with your weapon of choice. If possible monthly range time shredding paper at different distances will make you competent, comfortable and proficient in having that weapon on your person or in your Coach or both. If one is not willing to put in the time to be proficient with a weapon then it is best to forgo the effort and rely on your instincts to avoid danger and hope you are 100% successful.

I look at it this way there are three people in the world. There are the Lambs, then the Wolves and finally the Sheepdogs. I am not a Wolf, actually, I am a pacifist, I avoid conflict, and I will not be a Lamb waiting to be prayed on and so I look at myself as a Sheepdog. Trained, competent, and ready to protect myself, my wife and others that at prayed on by Wolves. I seek no confrontation and will put the peddle to the metal to escape but if cornered and no way out, I will defend and fight.

I have never felt so comfortable as when I am out for dinner with my wife and I have a 9mm on my hip or a Taurus PL22 in my ankle holster and knowing that I know how to use it and that we will not be a victim when we least expect to be confronted. Every month my wife and I go the gun range and go through 50 rounds each at different distances and leave the range feeling better for the time spent.

It is everyone’s duty to assess their level of risk and act in their own best interest. If that is not owning a weapon so be it, I respect that and will not condemn anyone or pass judgement; that is their decision; as for me I have chosen the other route and am comfortable with that. I am pleased that so many here are not judgemental and have entered into a meaningful dialogue and discussion without recrimination. This is a great group and I am so pleased you have allowed me to join and learn about the greatest way to travel America, in a Prevost Coach. How lucky you all are to be able to travel in style with the freedom to seek the joy of living in this great Country. There is so much to see and do. Congrats to all; May God keep you all safe in your travels.

Terri and I both have CC permits. I am professionally trained in and was an instructor in mixed martial arts, knife

fighting, stick fighting, Jui jit sui, multiple attackers, and firearms retention. I have sparred with professional cage

fighters. I have had my CC for 35 years. I have CC permits from three different states to expand my reciprocity.

I always have a four inch SOG knife in my possession, and a Sig P238 380. There is also always a 12 gauge

Mossberg in the coach. The best defense you have is awareness and the ability to avoid confrontation. After that

is the mindset to do whatever it takes to defeat who ever is threating you. He who hesitates is dead.
