Transfer Switch “communication problem”
Posted by Jim on September 25, 2014 at 12:50 pmOk, coolant is good now so I washed the bus, put it back in the pole barn and when I plugged it in I have a flashing lite on the total coach system, saying “transfer switch communication problem” everything is on and seems normal, batteries are charging but there is no smiley face under #1 inverter like usual just says “AC”
Boy oh Boy this has been and is a great learning experience. Jeff showed me lots of stuff I knew nothing about, the prevost shop gave me a bit of an education on the exhaust end so the learning continues.
So, once again, any advice would be appreciated. The batteries are showing “bulk” charge so if the batteries where low again could that be the problem and I should just let it charge back up?

The question is Royale specific so I’ll et folks who know the conversion answer specifically.
Generally speaking however when you plug into shore power the transfer switch should recognize the presence of shore power and automatically send shore power to your electrical panel and inverters. The inverters “see” that incoming power and shift from inverters creating 120v power from the batteries, to become battery chargers.
If they see shore power, and are functioning like chargers which you seem to indicate you are getting shore power into the coach past the transfer switch.

That’s correct Jon, if I didn’t get the message on the coach system all would be normal. I’m beginning to wonder if the draining of the house batteries for 10 days are making them difficult to charge since it once again went into bulk charge mode. I know if the batteries are shot, all kinds of strange things can happen so I’m going to wait to see the float come back on and then unpug and plug it back in. When I turn on the transfer switch after pluggin in I hear the familiar “pop” .

One single bad battery in a set can indeed do strange things. That is one reason why when stuff does not act “normal” we often suggest separating the batteries after they have gone to float mode and test them individually.
If they won’t go intoi fioat that alone might support the need to separate them and test them individually

Going to bulk charge when plugging in is not necessarily a problem. My Trace SW4024’s do it all the time. I would be concerned if they don’t go to float, or if it takes much longer than it used to to get there.
The lack of the “smiley face” I have no idea on….

The batteries start off on bulk which they have done many times. It then switches to the “float” mode. It is plugged into 30 amp right now in the pole barn and all is normal. I’m betting there is a bad battery in the bunch which is frustrating since I put in new house batteries 10 months ago. I wish they would have shut off the main house batteries at the shop instead of just turning off the 12V switch. 10 days with no charge to me, means the house batteries went dead.
After bringing it home, it took about 8 hours for both inverters to go to float mode. So my guess is I’ve got a bad battery in the bunch somewhere or I was wondering if the transfer switch itself is having a problem. As long as everything is working we are leaving for the weekend with the coach on Friday and I’ll take the meter with me to check the individual batteries. If I can’t figure it out then I’ll swing into Jeff’s on the way to Florida in late October.

I think you are saying of the batteries don’t go to float that it might indicate a transfer switch problem. I cannot tie the two things together in my mind.
The could be logical explainations for your batteries to stay in bulk charge for an extended period. One battery can be bad. But maybe your inverter charge current is set at a low rate so the length of charge time is goin to be extended. Some inverters just go into bulk charge every time they see power, and if you are turning power on and off as an effort to find out what is going on you could be extending the period for a bulk charge just by doing that.
If you do go into float, separate the batteries and individually test them. That is the starting point for any diagnosis.

I’ve had people kill their house batteries before on occasion and they have usually come back up with no problem, but you can’t do it often. Since they went into float, unplug for awhile and then start the bulk charge again and see if they come back to float in the usual time, 2 – 3 hours.

They do Tom…..I did that yesterday only this time they went to bulk charge for 30 minutes and then went to float. My buddy is an electrician so when we get back from the weekend I’m going to have him take a look at the transfer switch and put in a new one if need be. Keeping my fingers crossed that when we get to the campsite the switch will not show a communication error but since everything is working fine I don’t think we will have a problem.
If need be, are the transfer switches something I can get locally?

Jim,
I’m still confused. What has the battery issue got to do with the transfer switch?
Sounds like the batteries are charged and things are back to normal.
-
jon
batteries are charged and back to normal. Each tested and are fine.
I’m still getting an error code on my silverleaf system and the inverter is flashing on the control panel. The message is ” transfer switch communication problem.” I’m hooked to 50 amp and all seems normal. Turned inverters off then on. No change. Reset the inverters, no change. Guessing the transfer switch must be bad. Electrical is something I’m not comfortable with so I can call my electrician when I get home or swing into holland bus company on the way Monday to let them have a peak. Just wondering if there is something simple I can try.

Share the information, why keep it private, it might help someone else.

Jim it’s not the transfer switch , i am just about sure of this I had this problem with my Royale too
-
hi peter, I tried to call u last week for your “royale” experience. I’m going to call silverleaf on Monday. Gill also believes it is not the transfer switch but the way that silverleaf is “interpreting” the data. We’re in the coach, using 50 amp & all is normal except the error message on the silverleaf. What did u end up doing?
