Satellite TV is a dying industry. You might end up purchasing a boat anchor. Everybody is going streaming via internet. Musk’s Starlink will be able to provide broadband even in the boonies.

If you really need satellite TV, tracking dishes are necessarily smaller and have a worse signal to noise ratio than stationary dishes. Do you really need TV going down the road?

Upgrading your existing TV to broadband is easy. Install an Amazon Firestick (or equivalent) HDMI dongle and connect it to your phone’s WIFI hotspot. Done.

Do you really need “tracking”? Are you really going to be watching TV while driving? If so, good luck!

If not, your best choice is a Winegard Trav’ler. It only works when parked but it will allow full use of all DTV or DISH services including DISH Hopper or DTV Genie receivers.

Whoever you talked to is correct that a dome and DTV will not allow HD (this sucks) but DISH is full HD. The problem with a dome and DISH is that you can only use a single tuner receiver like the Wally. You could add a hard drive but that would only record what you are currently watching or record programs while you are away.

There are other restrictions. If you need additional details just let me know.

Personally, I believe the time for the dome has come and gone. Installing one at this time is a huge waste of money compared to what you could do with a stationary antenna like the Trav’ler.

I have removed two in motion sats from both my coaches and installed a traveler on both.

They worked really great.

There are so many other options for music while driving. The huge limitations of a dome (in my opinion) just can’t justify the usage compared to a Trav’ler (or RF Mogul if you are in that camp).

We have a radio. We have the ability to play single or multiple CD’s We have a Bose that has about 3500 of our music stored that we can play random.

But sometimes we want to start out with the 50’s, switch over to country, go to classical, big band, or whatever and it works like a charm and there is nothing with such a vast collection of music genres.

Thanks for the info on tracking domes vs a fixed dish receiver. Can you please embellish on the difference between the two..

I am torn as while driving long days my wife would really enjoy her programming with I am driving..

I also tend to pull over at rest stops for a few hours and my thoughts would be to have programming ready to watch vs put a dish up and stowing..

We also tend to jump around a lot never staying put for more then a day or two..Question what is the process for setting up and stowing the Traverler?

I had dish for years in my home and understand the Master DVR and slave units. If I was to go with a tracking system, what do I lose? If I am understanding your post you can only watch one show and NOT be able to record another. Is that correct?

Are you familiar with the KVH 1 capability?

David if you are a DISH customer you cannot use the Hopper/Joey ,AT ALL with a dome. The best you could do is use a Wally with a hard drive attached and watch 1 program (or record the program you are watching). It would also be able to record 1 program while you were away but it can only handle 1 channel at a time. You could get a 2nd Wally and hard drive but since there are 3 DISH satellites and a dome can only point to 1 satellite at a time, watching or recording programs is limited to ensuring both channels are coming from the same satellite. It’s not something you can plan, you just have to hope for the best. With a Trav’ler you would have the exact same service you have at home and you could simply move a Hopper to the RV. You could also move a Joey to power a 2nd TV. Some of that depends upon how the coach TV’s are setup.

With DirecTV, the domes cannot receive ANY programming in high def. so you will be watching satellite TV with an SD picture which, personally, I think sucks!

You would be able to use the Genie receiver/client setup ….yuck!

With the Trav’ler, same as above…full service.

With the Trav’ler, DISH or DirecTV and either the Hopper or Genie you would have all of that recorded programming (hundreds of hours) available to watch while traveling, under trees or just bored. You are also able to watch this programming without losing the signal every time you go under a bridge, behind some trees or driving through a tunnel.

We are DTV customers and full timers and have had a Trav’ler on my roof since it was released by Winegard about 6 or 7 years ago. Can’t imagine ever going back to a dome.

That is what I get off of Dish. Plus Dish has its own section for music so it is likely we get everything. But if i did what Bill says we would have to park to get such variety.

I never want anyone to make the leap from what I suggest what something can and cannot do with any kind of suggestion as to what YOU should do in your own coach. FOR ME…….I would never go back to a dome (yes, I had an in-motion dome for many, many years) now that things have changed so dramatically and my aversion to watching commercials now that I am able to utilize a DVR for nearly all of my TV watching. I have never tried it, but I suspect you could DVR hours of the various music channels and “watch” them as you drive, again, without interruption. Don’t hold me to that, as I have no reason to attempt that……..Hum, I wonder……
