  • Towing An 04 Dodge 2500 4×4?

Posted by Mike on May 18, 2014 at 2:27 pm

What problems am I likely to encounter towing an 04 Dodge 3/4 ton 4×4 pickup truck behind a Prevost?

I “assume” that the truck is towable by placing the transfer case and transmission into neutral. Is this correct? Any recommendations on tow-bars and braking unit?

    Thanks!

check your owners manual for towing.. If automatic transmission, I believe you place it in park, with transfer in neutral. If it’s like our jeep, a manual transmission, put in any gear with transfer in neutral, We use 10,000 rated Blue Ox Aventa II tow bars for the last 15 years. Some cars we use blue ox air assist brake system, others use Air Force one with great success, others use M-G braking system.

One trick we learned with dinghy braking system is to have installer place toad brake air line on tag air live and not steer axle. We developed a compromised steer axle air line for the dinghy braking once, and brakes of course locked down, the excuse for placing air line on steer axle was so you had dinghy brakes, in campgrounds making tight turns with you tag up. When tag is up, tag brakes are disengaged. But who speeds in a campground with tag up, that you would require dinghy brakes. We tapped into tag air line later busses and in case of issue, raising tag will interrupt air to tag grakes but at least you have steer and drive braking to get some where for repairs

I tow a 4 door GMC 4×4 and a jeep with the Blue Ox 10,000lb Aventa and M&G brake system it has been great on both vehicles. I notice the extra length on the truck but just have to be a bit more cautious on tight corners. My GMC has a specific ritual for 4 wheel down towing and transmisson tows in park.

My 2012 Ram 2500 manual says to put the transfer case in neutral and the transmission in 2nd gear in the case of a manual transmission or park for the automatic transmission.

    Mike & Cathy,

I tow a 2010 Chevy Suburban w/ Blue Ox bar & Air Force One braking system. No problem. Only thing is that tow will be nasty after the trip. Also use a 24 foot Featherlite trailer at times.

Good luck with coach search. We sold our house, relocated & ended up fulltiming.

Do a good check with the manual before you tow. If you can’t manually put the transfer case into neutral you will have to either get a driveline disconnect or/and a transmission fluid pump to keep every thing oiled. If the transmission has any part that will be moving while you tow you need lubrication and that only happens when the engine is running, hence the external transmission pump.

I have a Ford Excursion 4×4 and a electic transfer switch for the transfer case therefore I had to get a driveline disconnect.

Check the manual it should have something in there about towing four wheels down, if not check with FMCA. DO NOT trust a dealer to give you the correct anwers on this.

    Thanks for the replies!

Things are looking good for a quick sale of the house so we may be in a coach before too long. It will be really nice to be able to take my wife with me on business travel and to leave the airlines behind.

Dick, we are now in Angola, In at Panterra. We are replacing the oh so wonderful Slendide combo with a stack Bosch unit that we bought from Jim Marcei whose bus is here for some interior remodel. Got some good Pix of your bus. Left Jeff’s Wed and stayed at Two Rivers Landing till Sunday. Met Jon and Di for lunch Fri (thanks again guys) and saw his driveway (got a nosebleed) and his toy barn. We should be in Milw Wed or Thurs. When are you picking up yours ? The tires were going to be put on Thurs.

Your truck may have hydraulic pump assist braking, not vacuum assist. That may limit you on the type of auxiliar braking system you can use.

    Just be aware…

Our Dakota has an MG air brake system, unnecessary except a lot of mountain downgrades.

Les has made a good point and all owners should be aware that while certain vehicles are towable not all braking systems can be used with them.

M&G and Air Force One are two good systems but neither will work well or at all with heavier vehicles whose power brake assist comes from the power steering pump as opposed to a vacuum brake booster.

Heavier vehicles need supplemental braking. My H2 Hummer is 6700 pounds. My Ram 2500 is 7600 pounds. Both use hydraulic brake boosting. I am not selling Brakemaster, but I know of no other brake assist that can apply the braking force necessary to help slow that much added weight behind the bus. Air Force One claims their’s will work but the reality is their small air operated cylinder is likely to apply far less braking force than the larger air cylinder in the Brakemaster.
