SMX Control Box
My Aux Air A/C SMX Control Box, which was functioning fine the last couple days, has shut off. I checked the breaker and it’s on. I heard a sound coming from it when I was in the salon, which sounded like “clicking” on/off. I assume it may be a relay, circuit, or maybe a fuse. Any ideas?

Is the display dead? I assume you have the dash Aux AC button in the on position.

Yep … Display is dead. And yes, I tried both both buttons, on the driver’s left side arm and the one on the dash.

I believe SMX shuts down if freon is low. The clicking is probably start and stop several times and then shuts down to protect itself.

Freon? It’s gonna be 25 degrees here tonight … Is freon still used when the cruiseairs become a heat pump? I do know the heat pumps become ineffective below 40 degrees and this aux AC is the only one that doesn’t have either a Webasto or 110v tied into it. Don’t know if that would make any difference. Update, the SMX box magically started once we got back to the coach from dinner. Now to figure out why it shut down in the first place.

The refrigerant is definitely used when you use the CruiseAirs as heat pumps. All the system is doing is essentially run in reverse from when it is in AC mode. Sounds like a good reason to try out the Webasto! -
The Cruise-Air being a heat pump, uses freon during both the heating and the cooling cycles. It must have an adequate amount of freon to properly operate as both a heater and an air conditioner.

I understand that, but what would make the SMX control box shut down, go blank? I had the Webasto on so I wasn’t using the cruiseairs as heat pumps, right?

I had this happen a couple times on an SMX panel that was going south. I did find that if I powered off the breaker, pulled the panel, unplugged the panel and put it back together, I could get it to work again (for a while). I ended up replacing that panel and havent had an issue since.
Panels are rather expensive by the way 🙂

You are correct, the aux AC SMX does not control the webasto. Normaly, if the SMX is dead (blank) it’s do to haveing 120v power removed. You may want to talk to AAP and see what they have to say. http://www.aap.com/ and please mention PC, they’re an advertiser.

Well miracles happen and when Jeff turned it on, it turned on. Certainly could be “owner operator” error!

Tim, I too had an SMX panel go blank/black. Jeff found a burnt circuit board inside the cruise air. Luckily he had one on hand and installed it, all good.

So if Jeff turned it on and it worked, that simply means that you will have to haul Jeff with you during all of your travels. Fortunately he does not eat as much as his workers do, so that is one good thing. Just be careful he does not charge you by the hour for ‘stand-by’ time waiting for you to want to control something with the SMX.

Tim, maybe you’ll get lucky (we usually never do, but lately stuff has been fixing itself) and it did. When our SMX control for the front cruise first went blank, it came back on and worked for a while, then the display went goofy. Result: had to replace the panel and the control module (which was buried in a very difficult to find and get at place) but the $’s we not horrible. If I remember without looking the parts were about the same as the labor. Geo.
