Side Cameras
After installing my Total Vision Pan and Tilt rear camera with 9 inch color monitor, I said I will never need the side cameras the mirrors are fine, TILL! I helped my buddy install his Total Vision Pan and Tilt camera we also installed his side cameras , I wasn’t sold on the idea of side cameras till we tested it. I thought the side camera’s function was only when you turned on the blinkers you saw down the side of the coach when you changed lanes But! I didn’t realize when your driving down the freeway in traffic or not you can push the mode button on the monitor and get 3 nice size pictures of Left-Right and rear so with one easy look you can see everything. And the cameras are nice looking and you loosen a screw and you can aim it any position down the side. It looks like a easy install I have door panel off and shifter key pad lifted out ready to install. It’s amazing how clean the inside of the door is with panel off, Stainless steel rules

Long before side view cameras came into existence we learned there was no substitute for being aware of where our coach was relative to everyone else on the road. When it became obvious that was almost impossible convex mirrors were added to expand the view, especially on the passenger side to eliminate any blind spots anywhere along the side of the coach or toad.
If I were to have cameras installed I would want them on all the time because I can never predict when something that might happen that would make a sudden lane change a needed action on my part (such as debris in the road, someone cutting in too close and then slamming on the brakes, etc.) so having a constant awareness is a huge safety factor.

That’s why I decided do add them driving onfreeways that have more than 2 lanes when there are cars and trucks on both sides of you you can see a lot more with 1 glance, I like the part on the monitor that you can get all 3 pictures at the same time all the time.

What monitor did you use? Where did you find space to mount it? And finally, what side cam system did your friend use.
On the same line of thinking, I think we will see more adoption of the 360 degree direct overhead “birdseye” systems. They are on the market, and I have seen a couple on conversions. They use 4 wide-view cams mounted high, and a processor that knits the images together. I don’t know if these systems would be great for driving, but I think they could be very useful for parking.

It would be interesting to know if anyone has a system like John describes and if so is there any learning curve. In the case of mirrors we drivers are so acclimated to sighting down the side of our coaches that we interpret what we are seeing automatically. We can judge distances to an extent, we can measure relative speeds and see clues like a driver turning his head or a turn signal. but if viewed from above are we going to have to develop new techniques to interpret others near our coach and what they might do?

Here are some pics everything came from Rod Thomas art Total Vision here is a pic of side cam on friends XL2 coach, haven’t got mine yet. That pic is a 9 inch monitor. 1 of my Aqua Hot customers got a new 2018 H3 Millennium with that overhead image that is made by a bunch of cameras on the roof and a computer makes the image, it looks like your looking down at the roof and all the way around the coach. Pretty cool stuff

Sharp. Would be a great benefit to those of us that are novice drivers. Especially in heavy traffic areas.

We had the side view camera’s installed on our coach when it was being built. Liberty now offers the ‘Birds-eye-view’ system. Our camera’s have the night-vision lights circling the camera so you can see what’s going on in the dark.
Since we have the small drop down TV in the salon, I will lower that TV while we are stopped for lunch at a rest area/Walmart/etc. and I can watch the toad and what is going on behind the coach.
I can pull up the camera system on any TV in the coach including the bedroom TV at night. Even the passenger seat monitor has the option of watching the camera view that I have set while going down the road. The system will change to a side camera when I turn on the ‘blinker’.
When we are parked at a RV park, I will set the small drop-down TV for view of the front door so if anybody walks up I can see them before they ring the door bell or knock on the door.

Do you know what brand 360 camera system Liberty installed?

We had side cameras installed when we had our coach built. Only problem is I never remember to look at the monitor. I find myself depending 100% on the side mirrors.

Sorry, I do not know which brand Camera system that Liberty now installs. Maybe we’ll get that on our next one
