Jeff, you are welcome. No thanks needed however because we should be thanking you and all the members because you all are the ones that make this site.

One thing I hope everyone realizes is that we are the “go-to” place for owner to owner and enthusiast to enthusiast exchange of information and ideas. The cost cannot be beat unless someone pays members to join.

We have some very capable folks that now participate on the forum ranging from Ray Davis who has created a “glass dash” to Al Herman who is getting to be the Marathon pneumatic expert, to Jim Lane who knows the ownership of more buses and bus history than anyone I know, to Bob who answered your question and who has built more buses than some have owned. My point is these folks are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to knowledge and we are adding more each day.

Your participation is valuable so don’t hold back. Even questions are important, and this is an example of why. Now we know where to get rivets at a much better price.

Bob is absolutely correct. Just one other things to add, when calling Byler, ask for “old style Prevost rivets”. Last time I bought some they were much less that $3 each. While talking to them, buy a drill bit or two (depending on number of rivets you need to put in) from them that is correctly sized. They have super sharp drill bits that can be resharpened and have all the incremental sizes you need to make the rivet work correctly.

BTW, what year are you working on? Where is the country do you live? Bob is in Evansille, IN and I live in Springfield, MO. Bob is building a 98 XL45 and I am building a 91 XL40. There is a special category on the site called, “Builders” for us that are building our own coaches.

Back to the topic, buy unpolished rivets and polish yourself with a 3M Scotchbrite style wheel.

You will need a bench grinder, safety glasses or face shield, adapting arbor, polishing wheel and a handle to hold the rivet and leather gloves.

Rivet Supplies – This is a good source for supplies via mail order for buying small quantities. The wheel described is usually only available in case quantities from abrasive supply companies. This company will sell them one at a time.

The wheel you will want is an Scotchbrite EXL unitized wheel 3″ x1/2″ 2 SFN 17505

Order by phone it is easier. 617.666.9090

The above wheel is excellent for polishing and deburring SS. Practice first.

For the rivets make a handle from a dowell rod (broom stick) about 8″ long taper the end similar to a sharpened pencil with a blunt end that has a dia. close to the size of the rivet head. In the center of the rod end drill a hole into which you will snugly fit the rivet body (the hole must be deeper than the length of the rivet).

To polish, place a rivet in the handle and while supporting the rivet “pull pin” with the left hand thumband forefinger apply the rivet to the wheel turning the handle at a controlled rate (if you drill the hole in the handle too large the rivet will spin freely and that is undesirable).

Polish as much as you desire. With a little practice you will become an expert and make good production.

CAUTION: The rivets do get hot, you need the gloves.

I called Byler and was informed they have no rivets. I then used the Prevost number 504272 with my Prevost account to search and got a no stock item notice. I called Ron at the Ft Worth office and was informed there was a part n umber change. They changed to 504475. I ordered 200 and the price was 00.61 each. I ordered the and should live happily ever after.. I restore cars as a hobby and have polished, it feels like miles, of stainles molding. I have used caswell as a supplier of those supplies.

Sometimes it really depends who you get on phone. No matter what company you call! By the way I made a note of the part Number change and the 61 cents. I have 5 new pannels to put on the 98. I received my rivets today from Prevost.

First off the did not inform me or communicate that the were shipping from Canada. I called to check on the status and was old to provide my Fed Tax ID or SSAN. I did and 3 days later here they were. I opened the box and saw a aluminum 3/16 X 1/8 rivets. Nothing at all like I needed. These are the same ones I could have gotten from Lowes. I now am out one month and 1300 for 20 dollars worth ov rivets. I will call the Dallas office tomorrow and see what they have.. I will also attempt a refund for this item. Any help would be nice.

My recommendation would be to call the Nashville service center and describe the rivet best you can and then asking the person on the phone what rivets are most frequently used. Buy one or two of an assortment of what you think you want. When you get them and they/it is correct, only then order in quantity.

By the way, IBP sells rivets.

I paid $1 a rivet at Prevost-Ft Worth for the polished rivets. BTW, they come in 2 sizes and Prevost recommends the larger for the aluminum panels on the upper half of the coach.
