RETRACTABLE BED INSTALLATION
Thanks to a visit recently to POG’s used coach expo in Louisville and a tour of the new Emerald coach, we are retrofitting our single slide H with a retractable bed. Thanks also to John Walker from Emerald/Outlaw Coaches for his advice and generosity. A brand new unit that he was going to use in the X3 couldn’t be used, so he built his own. When I asked him if he would sell me one, he asked what I was going to use it in. When I told him, he said that the one he had but couldn’t use would work perfectly well in our bus, and that we could have it….would just have to get it shipped(130.00) from Texas to Wisconsin. I am always amazed by how many wonderful people there are within our community, but this is beyond any of that. Here are some pictures of the initial installation and will follow up with more as we continue with this project.

The mechanism that Emerald is making would have been about 11000, however it only retracts the head of the bed. The one that he purchased and then gave to us rtracts the head and foot and has massage. My best guess is that it’s in the 1400-1600 range. The manufacturer is Leggett & Platt. We are having a custom shaped Tempurpedic full queen mattress made for 3920.

That is awesome… I love it… do you have to add more base to it or is it the picture that makes it look narrow?? does the platform the mattress sits on have to b the same width as the mattress itself, I’ve often wondered if we can’t cheat and put a wider mattress on some of these beds especially when having a mattress custon made.
I wish we had a king size bed and I actually think we have room to add about 6 inches to the width but not a full 1 inches.

I forgot to relate that the original reason for all of this was an attempt (accomplished) to pick up enough room at the foot of the bed to walk straight on instead of sideways. Everything else it does is just a bonus. Geo

Diane, that is just the 4 piece base that comes with the bed mechanism. The original deck is being divided into 4 pieces(each segment minus1.5″) and then attachted to what you see in the pictures. The next pics will show that.

Moving along on the retractable bed install….. starting to attach the deck segments(cut from the original bed deck) and re-installing the massagers from the lower deck to the top deck. Have to install the last two segments and put the new mattress on top.

what are you gong to do with the beds base when the bed is folded up? It seem like it will still be in the way.

Greg, the bed pedastel is the same. When you are not in the bed and just the head is left up, it slides back and you pick up the 7″ overhang. That’s enough to accomplish walking past straight on instead of sideways, which was the main goal. When the head and foot is up there is an additional 8″ room except for the pedastel which is fixed. Being able to sit up in bed to watch tv or read and the massage is just a bonus. Geo.

I like it. are you able to lift it or push it so you can get to anything stored under the head of the bed.

Greg, our next pics as we finish up will show that we lost very little storage space and we can access it all fairly easily. It was also necessary to move the Bose bass unit 90deg and move an electrical junction box. The whole thing will end up taking about 5 hrs of work and running for stuff and maybe another 2 hrs of backyard engineering. Geo.

All done ! Just have a trim piece to make for where the bed base was routed out for the foot raise mechanism. It’s all that and a bag of chips.
