Harry is home for the moment, we have his coach and are running through some things….New air bags are going on now. Brake chambers, norgren valves are being installed this week as well….We are doing some other small house issues…..Heading into the Jake brake in the middle of this…….

I think Harry is home trying to recover from meeting various PC members.

It is bad enough getting a coach, trying to learn it, and then finding out it takes a few bales of Benjamins to keep one in good working order. But when you add having to hang around with PC members who are all giving him ideas on how to spend even more money and how to dump the tanks on the ground it starts to get a little scary. Then he finds out that the fence around ETLC is not to keep people out, but to keep PC members in, he escapes to his home to recover.

So Harry was being smothered. I’m glad things are progressing and he was able to escape!

I am currently housed at ETLC’s compound waiting for some work on my wounded coach. I can confirm Jeff’s report that work is proceeding on Harry’s Beaver. It is in the south stall without wheels as of yesterday. As for Harry, he is no where to be seen. I parked next to his Beaver when we arrived but no one was home. My thought is Harry had to return home to start a “GoFund Me” page to help defray the costs incurred in getting his Beaver back into a road worthy condition. No I did not see any plow/skid marks on Jeff’s parking lot so I had no clue Harry had finally taken great advice and brought his Beaver to ETLC.

Maybe this will wake up Harry. We miss you Harry, please come back!

Jeff, Lindsay: You’re right, I’m not known for quiet but it’s hard to communicate while flipping burgers at the local McDonalds!

Dick & Cathie: Fire hose is just about right. It’s like the old saying, or song, or movie, whatever it was… “I can’t dance, don’t ask me”! Actually I can dance, so ask me! Not you Jon!

Jeff Rowe: RE: Heading into the Jake brake in the middle of this……. I didn’t realize until recently that “Jake Brake” is a friend of Buddy’s, twice removed!

Jon and Di: “Meeting various PC members” was without question the highlight of my trip! I can’t even insert a joke about that, just kind decent folks! As for “finding out it takes a few bales of Benjamins”, that was the easy part. What was that strip search all about? And when you say “the fence around ETLC is not to keep people out, but to keep PC members in”. I found that was a given, I noticed the towers and gun emplacements after turning off the highway. I also thought Tom’s underwear flying as a windsock was an interesting twist. Some believe it was there for Kirby to know how the wind was blowing. Others think there was more to the shoe story?

Carole & Will, You put those wheels back on my bus! As soon as Jeff told me you were coming in I headed for higher ground! And as far as “not being home” I don’t have to be gone for that! And I sure wish I’d have thought of the “GoFund Me” page. I can see now how I’d position the add “Poor Prevost Bus Owner In Need Of Recourses To Fix Motor Coach So I Can Play And Have Fun”! If that doesn’t scream “Fund Me” I don’t know what does!

I’m reminded of years ago when I was a humorist speaker… I gave the crowd a piece sign and they returned half of it!

Harry, Your Beaver has been in the south repair bay since yesterday. I cannot verify but it looked as if the items underneath were completed yesterday. Here are two pics of the Beaver Bay:

Thank you ExpressBus, I really appreciate you posting those pictures! My bus “Baby” has not been right since I picked her up and you guys are no different than me. You want to keep what’s yours right and cared for and that’s what we’re doing at Jeff’s.

Harry, its raining this morning. ETLC now has the Beaver in the North Bay with lifts. The south bay was needed to finish installing a new shade fabric inside out of the rain.

You are welcome for the post with pictures. I thought you would be interested to know things, and by that I mean good things, are now happening with your Beaver.

Our coaches are the same age. The worst problem I’ve had was a blown engine after a shop performed an in chassis rebuild. They stood behind their work and only took six months to get a Jasper Built 8V92. The 8V92 is a temperature sensitive engine so watch your temp gauge frequently and if necessary to cool it down back off on the throttle pedal and the temp should drop back.

Jim Lane, of Jim Lane fame 🙂 has sent me a number of text messages telling me to never let the temp exceed195 and if it starts heading that direction downshift and/or back off throttle position.

As a new guy it’s not bad to hear it again, less one forgets! This is one of those things its best to remember!

Let me add to the 8V92 temperature discussion.

When everything is right an 8V92 is going to cycle somewhere within a range of 175 to 185. I won’t be more specific because there are slight differences between gauges and the signal from the sensor but as you get used to driving your coach you will learn your “normal”.

When you have a very hot day and a steep uphill climb for a long distance it can be expected for the temp to reach 195 or thereabouts. You know your cooling system is in good shape if that is the max temperature you ever see. As the system ages however your normal driving temps are going to remain in the range stated above because that is the thermostat cycling, but shorter hills, cooler days and steep inclines are going to push the temp to 195 and a little above more frequently. Then the highest temp you see will creep up to 197, then 200, then as age takes effect you might see it max out at 205. That is your coach telling you it is time to do something.

The system may need a good flush. It may need to have the radiator tubes rodded out. It might even need a new radiator, but whatever the fix you need to pay attention because your engine is far more expensive than even a new radiator.

The 8V92 with recommended cooling maintenance seems hard on cooling systems so being very pro-active in changing coolant and checking chemistry is a good idea to forestall the slow loss of cooling efficiency that seems to eventually impact the coach. Never ever let coolant cost be your first priority. Detroit has a spec for the acceptable coolants and that is what you must see on the label. If you have any doubt, just go to the Detroit dealer and buy the coolant from them. It might be pricey, but it will be what you need.

As a new owner I think Harry needs help from all the 8V92 guys to understand what his normal operating ranges are for all the gauges and what constitutes too high or too low.

My dash is what I believe you would call the “traditional Prevost dash” which also goes along with the Beaver Coach tradition of “keep it simple”! I find it difficult however to see the speedometer and some other gauges. No problem at night, when I don’t plan to do much driving, and more trouble during the day. It may be my seat position but being tall with long legs limits my comfortable seating. Here’s what my dash looks like.

I do have an iPhone app to show speed but that doesn’t help with the other gauges.
